OPPO BDP-83 Blu-ray players shipping to invited customers
Haven't nabbed one of OPPO's well put together BDP-83 Blu-ray players yet? Those who signed up early and got on the invitation list should be getting their hands on one very soon for $499 with an expected ship date of May 4. Everyone else? Read through our first impressions again (high build quality, fast loads, great audio decoding and easy to use menus) and wait for a wider release.

i thought AVR suppose to to do the decoding and suppose to have better audio decoding so why do we need the bluray player to do the decoding? just one question and besides the ease of use of the menu and fast load does this player really worth 499$?

Not all AVR either have HDMI inputs or even support for the newer codecs. Plus it could come down to which one has better chips for decoding and converting it, It is just a feature for higher end Blu-ray players, which this is.

if you have to come to this site, and ask if it's worth $499......well, to some yes, the quality from this player is one of the best out there. to some, maybe not, especially not in this economy. and what that short paragraph failed to mention is that is has great video capability, and it is a universal player.

Oppo never disappoints. I have extremely high expectations for this player. It looks nice and the load times seem promising. Supports all the codecs I crave, but at $499 seems a bit step in my book. Let's see if this thing is worth it.

Actually, they did disappoint when they announced that this player won't be region free, not even for DVD playback. Huge disappointment.

$499 is steep, eh? How about the Denon DVD-A1UD Blu-Ray player for $5900? (and when it ships is anyone's guess) That's the only real competition for this OPPO player.

I'd consider the PS3 real competition.

For 6K it better drive me home when I've had too much to drink.

If i didn't give a rats hind side about Bejeweled on the PS3, i would swap out my PS3 and Oppo 980H for this lovely.

The PS3 is NOT a competitior.
This is a universal player--it even plays DVD-Audio and SACD--pop in any 5" optical disc (with the exception of DVD-HD, Rest-in-Peace), and it'll play it.
