Say hello to the first Spanish-language network offering HD at "both the local and network levels," we'll be checking out not only
telenovelas in high definition, as
Telemundo gets started with the 2009 Billboard Latin Music Awards April 23. Stats have shown a high rate of acceptance of HDTV within the
Spanish speaking community, and Telemundo cited a survey indicating half of the respondents own an HDTV already. The first cities with HD on deck are Los Angeles, Miami, Las Vegas, Chicago, New York, Dallas, San Francisco, Houston and Puerto Rico, with the rest falling in line over the next year. Univision, you're up.

While not totally related, it will be of interest to some that Telemundo is based in Puerto Rico, it is not Mexican.

Let's hope Telemundo HD isn't as mega-compressed as NBC HD is. The video during the Beijing Olympics looked wonderful... as long as nobody moved. :-\

Where I live we can get Azteca and Televisa in HD. Televisa and Azteca do produce shows in HD but they tend to flip the wrong switch and end up showing SD stretch-o-vision. When they do show HD it's great. However, they tend to have interference issues due to LA and some San Diego LP stations.

The Chicago Telemmundo is the sister station of Chicago's NBC-WMAQ which went HD last year. Their two news desks are only separated by a couple small control and technical rooms, so Telemundo Chicago going HD probably isn't anything new for the people in that studio. Also, if you want to see what the Telemundo news desk looks like, go rent WeatherMan with Nicholas Cage as they filmed it in Chicago and used that very news desk for the movie.
