Xbox 360 TV Calibration app pops up on Community Games
For most of this month, one of the top 10 ranked Community Games on Major Nelson's list hasn't been a game at all, the TV Calibration app is a 200 point ($2.50) tool loaded with plenty of test patterns to make sure your video setup is configured perfectly. There's also a free trial, so we loaded it up and can say it does exactly what it says it does. Most games have at least some PQ optimization helpers, but it's unlikely you'll be able to get this detailed information about pixel mapping and test color patterns with a Gears of War disc, and hey, you gotta make sure those Netflix streams look their best on your HDTV. Other calibration tools may have a few more tests and work on more than one device, but for the price it seems to be a good value. Check out the gallery to see a few of the patterns included, or download it from the marketplace and give it a try.

You would think the Community Games section would sport nothing but games. Looking thru the line up there are so many programs that are the farthest thing from it. Look at the other two examples in the picture. There are two "games" that do nothing but make your controller rumble. Just the other day I found an application that is basically a fart machine. I guess it doesn't really matter but I was hoping to actually find some cool games pop up but instead there is a whole bunch of "games" that I think could be considered a waste of space. Xbox needs better screeners.

Does this have achievement points?

I see patterns for color and overscan, but nothing related to brightness and contrast which is usually the fixes that provide the most dramatic benefit. Anyone know if those are included?

I don't see how they can get the colors correct without a proper filter. Teh extreme fail.
DVE FTW! It's only $20, and I get to KEEP it forever.

Anybody else find it slightly disturbing that the 2nd game on the list turns the 360 controller into a massager

The problem is, I dont know how detailed this calibration tool will be before I buy it. My 360 recently RRoD'ed and my replacement unit, although much quieter now, has a different PQ than I remember. My television settings never changed and when I turned it on, everything was jaggy, sharp, colours were off etc... I'm guessing they might have updated the graphics chip or something.
Like don't low rank me, but I use to play it on dynamic with the "neon greens" and "snow whites" etc... and now to get a passable PQ i use the movie settings which I've tried to get to around 6500K settings.
My living room 52" incher is professionally calibrated and looks great. My bedroom television is a 32" LCD which I bought in december 2006 and the settings aren't very detailed to mess around with. You have the choice of Sports, Standard or Movie. If you change anything on those settings they become custom. The problem is, even if I change every setting to be the same, all 3 modes look differen no matter what. Sports is sharper and brighter no matter what, standard is normal and movie is smoother and darker.
Has anyone here used this download tool? Im thinking, I'd rather just get a DVE dvd or hd-dvd version since I have the add-on ($16 bucks clearance) and calibrate with that.

I low ranked you, but it's your fault because you told me not to!

I'll stick with tweakTV.com. It's free and they've already done the work for you. Granted it doesn't give me values specific to my particular TV (just the same model), but I'm no videophile.
