Pioneer KRP-600M plasma showing up with cracked screens?
Maybe Pioneer just needs to change shipping companies here, but we're seeing a frighteningly high amount of cracked screens on the KRP-600M over at AVSForum. The problem has become so bad, in fact, that users have started a dedicated thread just to grumble about it. Thus far, 11 responders have seen their precious plasma arrive with a cracked screen, while 18 received theirs in good shape -- not a good ratio in terms of quality control standards. We aren't sounding the fire alarm just yet, but we're curious, have any of you unboxed your shiny new set only to weep for hours due to a busted panel?

What about all the dead pixels on pioneer plasmas as well? you think the cracked screens are bad, they can return those; the dead pixels on a pioneer they are stuck with. So you just spent over $3,000 on a tv to have pixels stuck that can't be fixed, i'd be really pissed. I think I'd crack the screen and say I got one with a cracked screen; sorry but I wont deal with dead pixels either pioneer on such an expensive piece of equipment. Stuck pixel on a monitor is one thing, that might be ok but on your tv, NO!

i agree

18 okay, 11 damaged in a forum....hardly statistically significant. I would say that 75% of people visiting the forum are looking for help with issues or to gripe...

A couple years ago I ordered a 50" Philips plasma from Newegg that arrived cracked. I pulled it out of the box at 8 pm on a Thursday night and within an hour Newegg had arranged to ship me a new one free of charge. They even let me keep the old one for parts. I hope that Pioneer makes good to these people.

Mine arrived just over a month ago just fine from Amazon...its an amazing TV...worth every penny.

There's a good chance that this isn't all Pioneer's fault. I guarantee Pioneer ships all its TVs via freight on a palette, just like every other flat panel manufacturer. If only the same could be said for retailers, especially internet only outfits.
cwnyc @ Mar 29th 2009 2:20PM
I highly doubt it is Pioneer's fault... When I got my 60" Kuro, I saw the delivery person dropping the carton. Of course the delivery person said it was "fine" and that they do this "all the time" and I signed for it, only to discover the screen is cracked after I opened the carton. The seller was able to ship a new one out to me in 2 days.
However, the delivery person's' comment that they did this"all the time" makes me think that the majority of flat TVs most shipped now days are of smaller LCD sets made of plastic screens and lighter, so these delivery people were able to get away with dropping cartons with these smaller LCD sets without the screens cracking. However, once in a while they encounter a LARGE 60", heavy GLASS TV, and they treat them the same way they treat smaller LCD sets, of course there will be more cracked screens...

People generally don't say when their kit works fine, only when its broken. Therefore any ratio based on the broken / works for me reports is going to be horribly skewed.

Not with AVS forum. Yes, a lot of people only come there when there is something to complain about, but the majority, as evidenced by the 18 working units, are there as enthusiasts who just share information. So if the ratio is 18/11, I would say that indicates about a 5 percent real world damage rate, which is still a LOT of damaged tv's.
I worked at Fedex Ground for 5 years. I saw thousands of 32", 37", and 42" lcd/plasmas shipped, and never saw one damaged. However, I saw probably only five or six 60" size plasmas and ALL of them were damaged/destroyed. For any tv 52" or more, I would HIGHLY recommend using Fedex Freight or another freight carrier to ship it via it's own shrink-wrapped pallet, Fedex Ground/UPS Ground is just not equipped to handle these correctly (and most of the low wage workers don't care enough to try).

Both of my 50" kuro's arrived perfect ........... plus the seller guaranteed satisfaction or free replacement with ANY problem upon delivery. You'd be surprised how many folks buy for the cheapest price ONLY - online/ebay or not from an unauthorized Pio dealer and take the chance that nothing bad will happen during the panels shipment to their residence.

why are all these stories being posted about the pioneer KRP 600M. I thought this was a model only in Japan. Is this a model that is shipping state side. I thought the 5020FD 6020FD 111FD and 151FD were the last hurah for the Plasma Kuro Line. Am i wrong or is engadget choosing a new name for the kuros that i dont know about.

The North American M-Series is NOT a direct import from Europe or any other part of the world. It is designated for the custom installer market in North America. Although the specification is very similar to the European M-Series, they have different firmware (i.e. No ISFccc mode) in North America.
JASON @ Mar 30th 2009 8:27AM
why isnt anyone checking these screens before they leave when they buy them?
you goto bestbuy and buy a sammy 55"(not sure if bb sells pioneer) your going to load that on you truck without looking at the screen?
also are these customers not checking the shipments when the trucking companies deliver the panels?
tvguy @ Mar 30th 2009 9:22AM
Pioneer cannot force retailers to use a certain carrier. Also, plasma is more delicate than lcd, regardless of manufacturer and as a warranty servicer for all brands I have seen broken panels from all of them. To me this is just 11 people who cared enough to write about it.
ndskurfer @ Mar 30th 2009 9:44AM
Most of the 11 with broken panels made postings prior to receiving the broken panel. Of the 18, a couple of them were second shipments.
I don't think that they were on there just to gripe.

I received my Pioneer KRP-600m 60 inch with a Cracked Screen.
Shop Blimp, the supplier, will not respond to my problem.

We are distributors of Kuro plasmas located in Georgia. We have sold over 50 60" Kuro and over 30-50"Kuro. First, we inspect EVERY plasma we receive and inspect everyone we ship. Secondly, you HAVE to inspect plasma with a bright light or even a flashlight otherwise you may not even see the cracks. and finally, We only use AAA Cooper for shipping Plasma. They take extra measures to insure proper shipping. They allow you to inspect every shipment before the driver leaves. My Point, you cant blame Pioneer, or the trucking company. If you buy a TV for thousands of dollars and you don't properly inspect it before you buy, you have noone to blame but yourself
