Panasonic's portable Blu-ray player previewed in Japan
The Japanese variant of Panasonic's slick all in one portable Blu-ray player has peeked out from behind cover, ready to launch March 15. The DMP-BV100 adds a 1seg TV tuner but is otherwise the same as its U.S. cousin, ready to play your HD discs on its 1024x600 screen, or a max 1080i via HDMI out. BD-Live is still part of the package, as well as SD card reader, DLNA, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA support. If you're watching on the go, a 7 hour charge time will yield 2 and a half hours of either Blu-ray or OTA video, so getting through the LOTR trilogy on an airplane ride is unlikely unless you can plug in. Around 850€ ($1,070) will nab one for anyone who can't wait for a localized antenna-less version in May. Check out our CES hands on or more pics over at AV Watch.

Because they Can

Why? So, if you're like me and have shifted most of your purchases away from DVD to Blu-ray, you can watch said BDs on the go.
I don't think they're trying to convince anyone that you need Blu-ray on your 9" screen because it will look vastly superior to DVD (although I am sure it will look a little better, especially in terms of color and contrast).
No, I wouldn't buy this unit, especially considering the $1K price tag, but prices will come down over time and many people will have a need (i.e. parents with children who want to watch their Disney Blu-rays while on long car trips).

1024x600 is hardly even better than DVD

Why is a very good question. You have been able to get brand new "name" laptops with Blu drives in them for over a year at that price.

the greater question is why does it only output 1080i...punishment for portability?

you're right, that's the best question. The point of a portable BR player is so you can watch all your media on the move, not just your old DVDs. However, once you plug this into a regular TV, you have full HD audio, but only 1080i? Seriously, why the hell would they do that? They even made it 1080i over HDMI and not component...what the hell?

5x better looking than a DVD! (minus 3.5x due to limited screen resolution)
