Mini DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter ships next month for under $15
Who says you need a knock-down-drag-out to determine whether your next component should have HDMI or DisplayPort? The forward-thinking cats at Monoprice have finally provided a ship date for the forthcoming (March 15th) Mini DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter, which ought to help bargain shoppers out who have found themselves with a Mini DisplayPort-equipped laptop or graphics card. The best part? It's just $14.25 for one, and even less if you buy in bulk. How's that for fair pricing in a tough market?

*standing ovation*
Now, will I be able to get this in the UK?

And even more interesting: Will the HDMI adapter support audio?!
Tony @ Feb 10th 2009 7:41AM
Yes audio support would be grate. But I do not think that the mini DP outputs sound??
James @ Mar 31st 2009 10:18AM
That is correct, you will need a separate audio cable.
Peter F @ Feb 10th 2009 7:42AM
I believe the spec says it supports HDMI by just passing through the signal

I have 0 experience with DisplayPort, but it has to be better than HDMI. HDMI fucking blows.

Doesn't the new LED cinema display have speakers? I guess the mini displayport must pass through sound or they're pretty pointless!
Shawn Parr @ Feb 10th 2009 12:59PM
The LED Cinema Display uses the USB connection for the audio. It is still unknown as far as I know whether Macbooks with miniDP can pass audio via that connector or not.
If you don't believe me about the Cinema Display do a bit of Googling.

Even if mini displayport wont pass through sound, Monoprice could -theoretically- integrate the sound by combining the audio out (e.g. from USB) with the mini display port out into one hdmi-signal. But that's only theory and I guess we'll have to wait untill this pretty thing will be shipped.
Anyway, I am happy that there will be a solution finally :)

I would be greatly surprised if the monoprice solution integrates the USB audio into HDMI output. HDMI does not have separate lines for audio as far as I understand. They multiplex the audio and video together. That is pretty hard to do for a $15 adapter.

I love Monoprice

I've been waiting for this since October. Literally... waiting.
Thank you Monoprice... thank you

I don't want an adapter, I just want a cable... one end with mini displayport, the other with HDMI. I am tired of adapters

Wow this just made my night!

But it's useless without AUDIO!!!!
Most HD TV's (including my 52") only have "Seperate" audio input for the Computer line (RGB/DVI) in, not a seperate audio for HDMI in.
Dave-O. @ Apr 3rd 2009 2:15PM
CONFIRMED!- useless without Audio! (well, just not all that I hoped) I can't get my Samsung to except sound with RCA, while getting the video from an HDMI source. The TV ignores all other audio inputs when looking at the HDMI source. I'll have to route the sound to a separate stereo system, or find an adapter that combines the audio rca, and video HDMI to a single HDMI output. Sucks... unless someone knows another solution? Am I missing something?
