Cable companies following DISH's place-shifting lead?
Word from Multichannel News is that -- particularly in light of DISH's SlingLoaded DVR -- Comcast, Time Warner and Cox are all looking to include place-shifting rights in their latest carriage negotiations, promising subscriber access to their TV content even away from home. Unfortunately it appears their idea is to provide the TV feed over the Internet -- think Fancast and Starz Play -- instead of direct (and likely bandwidth consuming) DVR access. No word on which, if any, networks have agreed to such an arrangement but it does raise the question: would streaming access via PC or cellphone be enough to keep you from switching to satellite?

If I could log into my comcast account and stream ALL the channels that I get on my cable box, why would I even need a cable box anymore? Granted that the quality today would probably not be up to what I get over the box, but in theory it should be able to deliver the same quality. At the same time, I'd rather just pay the stations that I want directly and get the feed from their own web sites. So it seems that if the cable companies want to advocate for "place shifting" by simply letting you access a live feed from the web then they would be shooting themselves in the foot. (Not that I think that is a bad thing)

Whoa now Time Warner. I know you are a big boy and all, but you can't even make the program guide work. Let's leave place-shifting alone until your current product works. When I can change a channel without a 2.5 second delay, or scroll forward 6 hours in the guide in less than 15 seconds, we will talk.
