At 70-years old, it's hard to think of Pinocchio as a boy anoymore, but he'll be coming to life on Blu-ray as part of Disney's 2009 Blu-ray releases. Approximately seven titles will be released in the Blu-ray+DVD combo packs that families love for portability, including classics that will get the
Platinum Edition treatment, like "Pinocchio: 70th Anniversary Platinum Edition" and "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Platinum Edition." All in all, the Mouse will be turning more than 30 titles loose in North America on Blu-ray, with about 14 packaged with a
DisneyFile digital copy for the kids' viewing enjoyment. If you (or your kids) need to know what to watch for, hit the link for details.

What the hell? A platinum re-releas? I understand that they intended to start over with the Platinum Edition series after they'd done them all, but WHAT THE HELL ABOUT FANTASIA? I'd thought that they were going to start the re-releases after finishing all 14 of them for the first time.
Well, at least this means that Beauty and the Beast will probably come out on Blu-Ray about six months sooner than I thought. Since I missed the Platinum DVD of that movie, it's one that I'm particularly looking forward to on Blu-Ray. It's the only of Alan Menken's Disney movies that I don't have.

i read somewhere fwiw that fantasia and fantasia 2000 are coming out on blu-ray in 2010. the same source also had pinocchio and snow white for 2009 if that gives it any more credibility.
Covarr @ Jan 9th 2009 2:07AM
Oh, if they're not skipping Fantasia, just delaying it, then it's all good. I don't have Snow White anyway.

I really like the idea of packaging Blu-ray+DVD together so we have the BD for the big screen and the DVD for portable players. I hope more studios will start doing this.

Now, will Disney stop with the endless previews before the movie? At least let us choose "preview" from the menu. Pounding through to track 19 is getting annoying and Disney is by far the worst offender.
Mr_Fizzlepop @ Jan 9th 2009 3:32PM
Second that, my friend got a PS3 and bought sleeping beauty as his first movie as it had just been released.
I ended up bringing over another movie just to show him that all Blu-rays don't have 3 millions previews you have to get through.
gr689 @ Jan 9th 2009 3:49PM
So Mr Fizzlepop, you and your grown-up friend watched Sleeping Beauty together???? WOW!!!
Fredster @ Jan 9th 2009 5:05PM
Yeah, you will also be allowed to watch it after your 5th birthday, so a couple of more years to go buddy. Now shut up and go back sucking that milk bottle!!
gr689 @ Jan 9th 2009 5:16PM
Ok Fredster, till after my fifth birthday huh? A real quick come back, very clever too I might add. No Im sorry brilliant.......you had me at milk bottle..,..

Man, we forget our history. All the complaints about what ISN'T coming! Sheesh.
On DVD, Disney was very similar on the uptake. Sleeping Beauty Platinum was followed closely by Bug's Life. They're repeating the pattern.
I can't remember *exactly*, but I believe Lion King was either one or two years after Snow White (the 1st Platinum DVD)... either that or Sleeping Beauty was the follow-up. And Fantasia was *years* later, and not even considered a Platinum title, though a very good release.
If they follow suit, we should see announcements here and there for non-platinum, non-DVD-Pack titles that still might make 2009. Little Mermaid for example (which was a HORRIBLE DVD), was a "regular" release, and desperately in need of a remaster and updated to *good* HD (I have an HD cap, but it's still shoddy). Pocohontas, Mulan, Pooh were later DVDs, but still... the doors are open.
