Logitech's Harmony 1100 remote is more touchscreen, less buttons
Logitech's last Harmony launch was of the subtle and sneaky variety, but there's nothing at all quiet about this one. The big, bold and brash Harmony 1100 is showing itself here in Las Vegas, and the primary selling point is the customizable, 3.5-inch QVGA full-color touchscreen. Rather than getting your buttons all gummed up with pizza grease, you can now smear a nice, innocent panel as you attempt to alter volume and change channels. As expected, the unit packs a rechargeable battery and RF capabilities, and the guided online setup should make programming a lesson in simplicity. Can't wait to get your own? Tough luck, 'cause this one's not shipping to the US and Europe until next month for $499.99.

I really hope an RF capable version of the Harmony One is announced next! *crossing fingers*

How is this any different from the 1000, that's all we care about.

Almost 3 years since the PS3 has been released and Logitech still won't develop a bluetooth capable remote? Bluetooth (and RF for that matter) is vastly superior to IR - what the hell is taking adoption of these formats so long?
Dan @ Jan 6th 2009 12:44PM
+1 I'm getting so impatient. It's time for a universal remote that supports the PS3 natively.
DEEZNUTZ @ Jan 6th 2009 1:24PM
Failed logic. It was MUCH easier for Sony to support IR than harmony to implement BD for ONE component. Sony is the one to blame here, not Harmony or other uni-control makers. I could understand if there were several CE products on the market that have adopted BD, but there are no others worth the trouble.
Sony should release an official IR sensor that supports all the controls that the BD remote does... or update the PS3 firmware to support HDMI-CEC (Bravia Theatre-Sync) so that my TV or receiver can control the playback via the HDMI connection. Problem solved without unnecessary purchase of a new remote.

Replying to Deez...
I would like to disagree with you on that... bluetooth is the natural progression for remotes. Pairing is much easier than punching in a bunch of codes trying to figure out which "Sony" codes are right... is it 5668, 1230, 3776, 3778 who knows...
As an 880 owner I would LOVE to upgrade my remote to one that has bluetooth. Not only for the PS3 but for the many products that will surely be using that technology very soon.
Sony is moving on to bluetooth, Apple dropped the floppy disc (years ago), Nintendo has waggle controllers... while they might not be everyone's favorite you can't deny that it's the future; I want to be prepared.

Bluetooth is no natural extension. It has very limited range and is intended for 2-way short-range comm not one-way like remotes. BT has never really worked out past the personal-space area such as cellphones. Few people use it for remote controls because it has such limited range. RF is the natural extension here, not BT.
The only reason Sony used it was because it "came with" a chip they were already using. Why add $5 to every remote when only PS3 users will benefit?

Does this have learning RF capability? I need something that works with my Vudu box if I'm going to spend that kind of money on a remote...
T-bone @ Jan 6th 2009 12:59PM
Give me the tactile buttons so I don't have to look at the screen to skip commercials.
IseWise @ Jan 6th 2009 8:43PM
Couldn't agree more. First, let me admit that I have a Logitech Harmony One remote. I love the thing, but the touch screen is really just a gimmick and I try to use very little. Everyone is so got up in touchscreen's on every CE device that manufacturers are putting touchscreens on devices that should never have them. What happened to the ability to "braille read" the remote controls buttons?
Simon @ Jan 6th 2009 2:33PM
I have the 1000, and this one is exactly the same... The only difference is, there are MORE buttons, not less. The new buttons are the 4 small ones on the left.
JBDragon @ Jan 6th 2009 9:36PM
Those are buttons on the left? I have the 1000 myself with the RF Module, and I really like it. I got a great on mine, and yet Best Buy still selling the 1000 for the $499 price. Maybe they'll finally lower the price with the 1100 comes out. When I got mine quite some time ago I paid under $300. The minor annoying problem I have it hitting the Help button when I'm FF,and need to stop and I'm trying to get out of that freeken help menu and stop. After using it for quite some time, I'm used to it now. I like the Different Screens for each device. It's simple to use. Sure you have to glance at the screen. I have my finger on the screen where it needs to be to stop the FF of commercials so I can watch when they end. I'd like to see how much of a difference it is between the 1000 and the 1100. Is it worth updating?!?!

I'm sorry this remote and it's older one are a pile of fail. The amount of massive glitches and utter lack of support for this remote is why it is far lacking from a slew of others out there. If you want a true remote look at companies like Universal Remote Control.
Andrew @ Jan 6th 2009 11:28PM
This remote and it's older version are pathetic and have had notorious amount of problems. For myself and my HT I went with Universal Remote Control due to it's superior RF abilities and advanced automation capabilities.
