Dolby throws its hat into the home 3D arena
Not satisfied with battling RealD for theater 3D dominance, Dolby Labs is pushing forward its 3D solution for home viewers. Timely, since this will should be the year SMPTE picks a direction and everyone gets behind it (or not,) and Dolby apparently already made its case back in September. We'll be able to judge their offering vs. Panasonic, TDVision and all others this week and hopefully come away knowing if 3D really is ready to be the next big thing or just a useless gimmick.

I wonder what happens when some eyeglass wearer sues under the ADA. These things don't seem very friendly to the many millions who wear glasses.

Nothing. 3D Glasses have nothing to do with employment, public accommodation, transportation, etc.

And I suppose someone with no arms should sue Gap because all their shirts have arm holes.

cb: Broadcasting is a public thing, on public airwaves.
Armhole guy: we're talking about 30-50% of the population here, and you cannot watch a 3D broadcast without these glasses. Again, public airwaves. 3D won't work until it doesn't need special glasses.

3d is a gimmick. It was a gimmick in the 50s that was employed by moviemakers and theaters who were scared that they were losing their audience to television, and now they've resurrected it to fight off home theater.
The only useful purpose that I can conceive of for this type of technology is in gaming, and there are no stereoscopic consoles currently on the market, or announced (the long dead and buried Virtual Boy, and the SEGA Master System being the only examples that I can think of off the top of my head).

So 3D is back to fight off the acceptance of 3D in the theater, by bringing it to the home? how does that hurt 3D? how does that hurt anyone? modern 3D destroys the antiquated red and blue lensed glasses of the 50's in every way. Those were gimmicky, while Stereoscopic 3D actually has value.
And the PS3 is fully capable of handling stereoscopic 3D games.

I think all three current systems can handle it just fine. 3D is quickly becoming the future of viewing media, you don't have to like it, but that doesn't mean it isn't going to happen. I urge you to watch a movie in 3D IMAX, and tell me that its the same 3D your grandparents watched.

Really good quality 3D glasses that were comfortable along with top quality 3D imaging will be a very cool idea. Can you imagine a superbly transferred 3D version of Dark Knight, Iron Man, Transformers, Jurassic Park etc along with nice comfy well made 3D glasses. Awesome.

Screw 3D versions of movies. Can you imagine 3D versions of Left for Dead, Dead Space or Forza? Oh man, awsum!!!!

Half of the US population wears corrective lenses of some sort. Some of them wear contacts, but close to 100 million Americans wear glasses. By the age of 50, 3/4ths wear corrective lenses.
Even if ADA doesn't apply, that's too many people to ignore.

We could get lasik and have our eyes re-shaped to see 3D all the time.
