Download your shows in HD, send them to your HDTV from your PC via HDMI or VGA. The TV experience is much better from a couch on a big screen than on your 20" monitor in your office chair. I've got a great monitor (Samsung Syncmaster 206BW), but the image is looks poor compared to my HDTV (Samsung LN40A650).

Brian

Comments on Could you live on online TV / Netflix alone? And you know what? I could still give it up. Actually, I pretty much have. Anything on network TV that I'm even remotely interested in is offered online, along with several shows that I don't even get (Hulu/Always Sunny in Philadelphia - the perfect combination). I can watch the online versions whenever I want, and with fewer commercials, too. The only thing I think I've actually sat down and watched in the last month are the Bills games on Sunday afternoons.

I don't need TV for the news. I rarely watch the news anymore; I'd rather read the paper in the morning and check the TV stations' websites later if I want additional sources on anything.

kevin

Comments on Could you live on online TV / Netflix alone? With netflix now on the TiVo, I get a great selection of older movies and some recent TV shows that should satisfy most of my demands.

The biggest question/issue for me is OTA reception. Due to my sports allegiances, I need the NY stations, but antennaweb only says I can get philly stations where I live. I have read reports of people getting NYC channels via antenna in my area, but usually that involves a large directional antenna that doesn't have a high WAF (wife acceptance factor). So I need to experiment to see what kind of reception I can get.

The other issue is general content WAF. How can I get access to the content of HGTV, TLC, etc. on my TV? I know hulu has alot of that content, but that isn't easily streamable to my current stbs (TiVo & PCH). I know playon can proxy the stream to the PCH, but that program taxes my old desktop too much to make it practical. I do need to upgrade that computer though. Also boxee on an old macbook is also an option.

Dropping pay TV should save me at least $40/month. I'd like any expenses I incur (antena, new STBs, computers, etc.) to be recoop'd within the first year (so less than $480). It will be an interesting experiment.

scyber

Comments on Could you live on online TV / Netflix alone? My wife and I love it. Instead of surfing 150 channels and getting disappointed we only have to surf 20 channels to get that same disappointment feeling.

I do watch much less HD (a very sad thing), but a new Blu-Ray player should shore that up. My main problem was that most of the basic cable channels have abandoned their original programming (History Channel is about truckers and loggers, Bravo is about reality shows, A&E is about crime, etc, etc). You just don't get the product you see on the packaging (like a the picture of a Big Mac on the menu is nothing like what McDonalds actually serves you). The individual shows themselves are such poor quality pay-tv is no longer a strong value proposition for us. All of the really good shows will be put on disc anyway, right?

My only gripe is that I miss 24-hr cable news (I'm a junky) and I will need to sort out an HD solution for the last 10 episodes of Battlestar Galactica and Caprica (which I will buy on disc anyway).

I may go back to pay-tv when Fios is ready on my street, but probably not.

Dan in DCVA

Comments on Could you live on online TV / Netflix alone? If it wasn't for college basketball (and the need for CSN & ESPN) I'd drop cable all together. Requiring a slight battle with the HOA, but with the FCC on my side I will prevail. TiVo HD makes itself quite useful in this situation as well - works interchangeably between OTA/cable allowing year round retention of DVR convenience. Plus the monthly fee is actually less than the monthly Comcast DVR fee. This setup should save me about $500 per year [($70/mo x 8) - ($55 install fee)].

Tim

Comments on Could you live on online TV / Netflix alone? Yes, they may offer HD cable boxes and a few HD channels. However the majority of the HD channels are not HD content and only have stereo sound. All of it is online and text. I can't stomach video broadcasting of news...too much babble and the information comes out so slowly.

YouFaceTheTick

Comments on Could you live on online TV / Netflix alone? I'd also miss ESPN being an avid sports fan. Other than those things I don't watch anything really. Its sad and I wish I could order channels a la carte because those are some of my passions.

Ernesto

Comments on Could you live on online TV / Netflix alone? I've found the espn solution-somewhat. Check out live college basketball free at espn360 which is available without cost depending on your high speed internet provider. New option to subscribe to nba season online at nba.com, select season pass. Today it is $99. I can't find my Bravo shows anywhere. I'm wondering if they are available on itunes but I haven't checked. I'm so sick of cable/satellite locking into contracts and then the next week offering the same service to new customers for 75% less.

Trish

Comments on Could you live on online TV / Netflix alone? Recently I turn off my Directv after football season and just do Netflix for 7-8 months of the year. This year we have a roku and we'll probably pick up a HTPC (2009 mac mini maybe?) to act as a conduit for online TV/Itunes.

Cable is $85 a month (not including $19 for netflix). We could download 30 rock for free! And Friday Night Lights is pretty much done for 2008. So that leaves... Dexter. We can wait for DVD. I see a savings of $500+ and nothing really missed as most TV sucks.

YouFaceTheTick

Comments on Could you live on online TV / Netflix alone? We got rid of cable months ago, and have been using Netflix/Roku, AppleTV, Hulu, and over the air signal since. It's really not complicated, nor is it all that extraordinary, either. I agree with Minimalist--you save enough money for an occasional iTunes TV show or movie, and a nice 3-at-a-time Netflix subscription. Not to mention being able to buy two Roku boxes, and an AppleTV.

And that's just on two month's savings.

Why do you think cable companies and companies like AT&T are looking at broadband caps? Scared to death we won't need their Uverse et al.

Shelley

Comments on Could you live on online TV / Netflix alone?
