China's Blu-ray rival lacks key manufacturer support
HD DVD's strike from beyond the grave may be falling short before it even gets started, as Digitimes reports no Taiwan drive manufacturers have joined the China Blue HD team so far -- and according to the always talkative anonymous sources, there's little optimism they will. Unfortunately the manufacturer support stage is where VMD, EVD and FVD failed before it and with no Hollywood support and cheaper Blu-ray hardware on the way, it's hard to see how CBHD will ever have much impact.

CBHD was a fairly pointless standard that had more to do with China's constant attempts to create its own video standards than any attempt to push forward the technology. They took only the one part of HD DVD that was inferior to Blu-ray, the actual media, tweaked it to ensure patent royalties would be payable to Chinese companies (without actually improving it in any way) and replaced HD DVD's excellent Advanced Content system with crude DVD-like functionality.
About the only positive thing that might have come from the technology taking off would have been relatively easy to make dual format HD DVD/CBHD decks, which would have ensured people with HD DVD collections would have been assured of hardware support for years to come. But even that's a "They might have done it" rather than a "They would have".
May it rot.

"tweaked it to ensure patent royalties would be payable to Chinese companies..."
No. Not Chinese companies. The Communist Party of China (i.e. the Chinese government). Every "company" is required to have some stake owned by the government.

It wouldn't have done well in the States anyways with China right in the name.
Some of us, now more than ever knowing how much money flows to China from the US, go out of our way to not buy things produced in China.

Good luck with that one.. everything you buy today be it electronics or any other mass produced product will be from China.. it's already too late to boycot it since it's the US government that allowed this outpouring in the first place. Now every single larger company is relying on China for cheap labor and manufacturing.
If it's not China it will be Taiwan.. either way it's too late. Why do you think you are able to get cheaper and cheaper hardware? It's all China baby and quantity over quality - the capitalist way.

HD DVD had manufacturer support, a head start, and still died by its own hands when its fearless leader feared the worse and ran home crying to momma.
