Blu-ray recorders surpass 50% market share for all DVD recorders in Japan
Okay, so having half of the DVD recorders in Japan be of the Blu-ray variety is pretty impressive in and of itself, but considering that this same statistic sat at 30% in late October (with players included), we can't help but be floored. Going back to October 2007, BD recorders made up just 10% of the market, and perpetually falling prices are thanked for the rapid increase over the past year and change. Additionally, new research has found that "Blu-ray Disc recorders are replacing DVD recorders 1.5 times faster than DVD recorders replaced VHS recorders," and not surprisingly, the availability of low-cost HDTVs is credited with helping to speed the transition. Just imagine these figures post-Christmas.

The US doesn't seem as inclined about BD as the rest of the world. Ideas why? (Besides economy.)

The article's about BD recorders. I'd be a hell of a lot more interested in BD if there was a DVR with a built-in BD recorder in this country too.

"and overall prices averaged $200 compared to nearly $400 just a year ago"
IN America.
I choose to believe that in Japon, everyone has five 4K definition tvs and even their cell phones are Blu-Ray.
It is especially amazing that they have the time to buy anything, what with their 80 hour work week.

Way to pull that quote from a totally different article. You fail.
And Americans actually work the about the same amount of average hours as Japan, FYI. If you're going to make that statement, at least refer to Korea.

Ok, so when anyone buys a standalone blu ray player, are they thinking, does this record in blu ray? I think we're more into hard disk recording, I doubt that stat is talking about pc blu ray vs pc dvd recordable drives.
Sure, my ma has a standalone dvd recorder to record vcr tapes to dvd, but I don't see this extending to the blu ray arena.

Good point.
I only want a Blu-Ray player in order to rip discs to my hard drive.

As long as not too exspensive...I bet BD recorders sell faster in America then just a BD player.

Not so rosy? They rated it pretty high. DVD recorders have the same bad interfaces as well. Of course its expensive. And it needs a patch. Oh noes.

DVD4ME it's only $1700!
I can see BD recorders becoming popular when the price comes down. It also would be nice if there was a way to record off of cable TV without needing a company DVR where there's a monthly fee.
