Nielsen VideoScan High-Def market share for week ending November 30th, 2008

After Home Media Magazine took a week off from analyzing the Nielsen VideoScan numbers -- probably due to the short week -- Blu-ray manages to finally do in the last week of November what it did during every week in October: gain double digit market share of the top 20 titles. This was mostly due to Hancock which managed over 14 percent of the market from its standard-def brother. The other big help was from old favorites like Transformers and the latest Indiana movie. In fact the only other new release this week that managed to make the Blu-ray top 20 was Fred Claus at number 15. The very same title was at number 7 on the DVD charts and only gave up about 4 percent of its share to Blu-ray. It's hard to judge how well WALL-E did its first week, but based on its performance this week, we'd assume not very good on Blu-ray. But with all the solid catalog titles like The Shawshank Redemption due next week, we'll go out on a limb and predict that Blu-ray will stay over 10 percent, and just watch out the for the week after where we expect The Dark Knight to bring Blu-ray to new heights.

Wall-E not doing well on Blu-ray? That seems vaguely insane to me. I know not everyone loved the film, but plenty did, and if there's one movie that just shines on this format, Wall-E is it.

Wall-E isn't really aimed at the PS3 demographic. Iron Man, yes. Batman perhaps. Wall-E, nope.
It's going to be a while before the PS3 thing stops distorting sale figures.

Wall-E probably would have done better had Transformers not been $10/Free (via rebate) at many places. Unless I'm reading into it wrong.

How is over 1/3 of all Wall-E movies sold being on Blu-ray classified as not doing well? Doesn't this mean 1 of of every three people are buying it on Blu-ray one week after it's released? I'd say that is pretty solid.

You also gotta figure there was a two disc Blu-ray version of Wall-E without digital copy as well, and it's the three disc version specified on the list. I'm not sure why there was the two disc version since they cost nearly the same (at least on Amazon), but those two versions together add up to at least a little more.

You're also forgetting this is over a week after wall-e came out, most people who wanted Wall-e on DVD bought it the week before (Nov 18), and probably a few people who didn't buy Wall-e took advantage of the Blu-ray player deals and went ahead and picked up the movie also, continuous sales on a DVD doesn't usually keep up with the market for more than one week, especially when a new title at the same level of release comes out the next week.

The chart contains two Wall-Es.
The 3 Disc Special Edition is the one where BDs had a 35.47% market share. That is, if they shifted 6,453 copies of Wall-E 3 Disc Special Edition DVD, then they shifted 3547 copies of Wall-E 3 Disc Special Edition BD.
However, the three disc special edition BD was also considerably less popular than the regular Wall-E BD, which sold three times as many copies, but only managed a 7.85% marketshare. That is, if they shifted 41,467 copies of Wall-E Widescreen/Fullscreen single disc edition, then they shifted 3,533 copies of regular, non-three disc, Wall-E BD.
Over-all, the Wall-E market share was slightly under 13%, which was good for Blu-ray but isn't anything close to the 1/3 you're suggesting.
So it's not the case that "over 1/3 of all Wall-E movies sold being on Blu-ray" for a variety of reasons.

It's not just the ps3 ...this is still an early adoption stage driven by young males.. or young at heart...myself....40 male.. just got my BD player about 3 weeks ago and have 6 bond movies, iron man, transformers, band of brothers and kung fu panda. now kung fu was a last min purchase i half regret. the point is at $15-$20 a pop 90% or higher are going to be action movies.
BTW...please stop with the DK is going to break all records...it might but the movie was a let down... give me Jack Nicholas as joker anyday.
Spider1981 @ Dec 7th 2008 2:48AM
Just because you didn't like TDK doesn't make the sales record predictions unjustified or untrue. Also, isn't jack nicholas a golfer? I really don't see that happening.
DrXym @ Dec 7th 2008 6:03AM
The Dark Knight is going to smash BD sales records. Smash. Whether you personally like the movie or not isn't going to change that.
