It's official: Redbox welcomes Blu-ray with open arms

They always said a picture was worth a few hundred words, and that's about right with the image above. After toying with the idea for a tick, it seems that Redbox has decided to go Blu. Starting now in select movie rental kiosks, users can rent a Blu-ray Disc for just $1 per night, but you'll have to be lucky enough to be near one that actually serves up BDs. Have a look at your local machine(s) and see if you're one of the fortunate ones.

wow 1$ per night that's great, it beats like Nexflix and every other service, movies are pretty much a one time thing anyways it's even cheaper than payperview

This is good news indeed, and I'm not even that big of a blu-ray fan. After looking at this I'm thinking that I'm going to cancel my netflix account that I started with my 360 since the selection sucks IMO. At least this way I can get good new movies that I want to watch.

Blu-ray Discs aren't available at every redbox kiosk, and they aren't available for online reservation, they are available at these redbox locations near you:

The not available for online reservation kills it. Why waste gas driving 5+ miles to discover the good ones are out of stock. Let me know when you can reserve online and I might give it a try.

Just went by my podunk store with a Redbox kiosk, and there were two Blu-Ray discs in stock. Naturally, I rented both. The discs were "Journey to the Center of the Earth" and "Jumper"

Watching Journey right now, and although the movie seems to suck, the picture is perfect.

Just got my first Blu Ray from the local Redbox for $1. Awesome for me, but bad for Redbox.

You see, Redbox just added them into the mix with all the DVDs, I almost missed them at first. The only way to tell they were Blu Ray was by looking at the small box art image and seeing the Blue shell which was photographed. It also helped knowing the Tropic Thunder Cover art was different for the Blu Ray version.

I chose the movie, it popped out after I paid my dollar and written on the face of the disc in permanent marker was:

"Defective!"

Of course the disc was fine, not a single scratch. Some poor customer rented it unknowning that they were not getting a DVD. Even the case the disc came in says DVD all over it.

I want Redbox to be successful. They need to add a screen to inform the customer that they are choosing Blu Ray instead of a DVD.

Even my (hopefuly former) local video store makes a point to always ask everytime before I rent if I really have a Blu Ray player.
