Watch what you want, when you want. I have Comcast and it works just fine. I've watched a few shows, SD content is what you expect. It's not that bad, better then VHS, not quite DVD, The HD looks much better, and I can't wait for the better sound, but it's still good. I hope this really catches on. The only PROBLEM right now is content. They say 10,000 SD movies or whatever, but finding something I like is limiting, especially for HD content. That's a real downer. The loss of Sony Movies didn't help, but I'd like to see a lot of newer movies, and bigger hits. Really, I'd pay a couple bucks more a month for much better quality selection of movies. It's a start, and hopefully will catch on, not only for the Xbox 360, but a lot of other Hardware. Personally I think if people can stream any movie they want legally and cheaply, then there's no reason at all to Pirate movies and in the end the movie studio's make more money. When VHS movies were first sold, you were paying like $90 for it, it got cheaper, but DVD's came out, it really dropped into the $20 range where far, far more people would buy the movies, not just rent them. That's why movies rentals are dropping like flys, you can buy movies pretty cheap now. You start steaming movies cheaply, Lots of people sign up and watch, maybe even more then DVD in the future. All them people paying a monthly subscription and streaming a couple to a bunch of movies a month. Guaranteed Income every month. I watch a few FREE HD Video on Demand movies from comcast, I don't pay to watch any of them though, and I've never paid for a PPV movie.

JBDragon

Comments on HD Netflix streaming goes live on Xbox 360

While I haven't had any connection issues with Netflix on NXE, I can tell you OBJECTIVELY that the picture quality on Netflix HD streams is NOWHERE NEAR the quality of a physical Blu-ray disc (or HD DVD). And the selection sucks. Whoever said that HD streaming on the 360 would even vaguely affect Blu-ray sales and rentals was seriously smoking something.

Patrick

Comments on HD Netflix streaming goes live on Xbox 360

Sure the selection is rough currently, but the service has only been available for a couple of days. In a year or so, when there's a larger selection and more people have higher bandwidth, this will be a no brainer for late adopters to HD:

'Spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars on non-user friendly DRM slathered blu-ray equipment and discs, or use the technology already in my home to get movies quickly and with reasonable if not comparable quality -- for half of the cost of 1 bluray disc per month.'

Every few years I change my viewing habits and with the release of this Netflix service over my 360, I'm going to drop the Dish (compression rates are terrible, the streaming Netflix looks way better - especially in dark areas), get Uverse at the highest internet speeds i can get. Streaming is the next-gen viewing experience.

NO BLU RAY FOR ME. It's not worth it. I know that soon enough i would be putting the BR player in my basement with my HDdvd player. Besides, Sony products are overpriced, exaggerated in terms of quality and chock full of DRM.
+ the PS3 is the worst game system ever. It's slow and the games don't look as good as the 360. We have one where i work and everytime i turn it on it takes soooooo long to update and install garbage. I will say the content is not always the best, but that goes back to movies and the agreements with the studios. I hope that it will change within the next year. If not, I stop netflix, problem solved.

As far as content. I watched an episode of Heroes on Universal HD (over TimeWarnerCable) and was hard pressed to see much visually different than my streaming Netflix connection for the same program. I do see there isn't 5.1 , but the sound isn't terrible.

For those that would complain that it's not totally HD, I would say this....IT'S STREAMING OVER THE INTERNET!!!!! TCP does require packet checking at the expense of speed. So deal with it or choose not to subscribe. Adding the Netflix functionality didn't cost you anything....Microsoft did it free of charge in the update.

On a different note...I will admit my hat is off to MS on their updates. I have respect for their new look, but also the infrequency of their updates. Once a quarter is more than enough, unlike my PS-3 that (before I shipped it off to get the blu-ray drive repaired), would seemingly ask for an update each time I turned it on. Granted I turned it on every couple of weeks to watch a movie or check content. But there have been more updates to my PS-3 in the 10 months I've had it, than all 3 years of MS updates for my 360.

Well Played M$.

KD in KC
