This is bullshit.
I want to know that the hardware I'm buying is actually built by the company whose name is stamped all over it. Is that so much to ask?
If I wanted to buy generic hardware, I'd seek out hardware with a generic name.

Ed, I think you would be surprised how many products stamped Toshiba, Sony, Philips, Grundig, Panasonic etc. come from OEMs or contain substantial OEM parts.

Almost nobody makes their own stuff these days. Even Apple's contribution to their own products is limited to marketing, financing, and over-all design of circuit boards and cases and the occasional IC. The products are made by various manufacturers in Asia, and most of the components are designed by third parties.
Philips are associated with the Funai products in one way or another. They wouldn't have licensed the brands if they didn't believe the Funai products would in some way be substandard and detrimental to their image. So relax. If you'd have bought a Philips before the announcement, you have no reason not to buy one after it, unless you have something against Funai directly.
Me, I'll skip it until Funai start making HD DVD players ;-)
