Believe it or not,
Black Friday 2008 is under two weeks away. And with the
economy like it is, we suspect a whole gaggle of you are going to be scouring the flyers like never before in an attempt to grab only the most supreme of deals. We've already begun to
see what certain big box retailers are
offering, so we're curious as to what items have caught your eye thus far? Is the Day-After-Thanksgiving 2008 the day you finally buy into Blu-ray? Will you be snagging a bedroom HDTV? Replacing the set in your den? C'mon, let us know what you'll be after -- chances are we'll spot each other in a line somewhere.

Nothing, I'm in the process of getting out of debt.
FreeRange @ Nov 15th 2008 12:26PM
"Nothing" should be an option. It's what I would have chosen.
Galley @ Nov 15th 2008 12:27PM
What fun is that! ;-)
FreeRange @ Nov 15th 2008 1:17PM
No fun at all, honestly, but until I find something in the ads that gets me out of bed I'm going to save my time and money. For the last four or five years I've set out around 6:30 or 7am and made a trip over to Circuit and BBY for some cheap tv shows on DVD...but I just don't feel compelled by the offers this year.
Me going to the stores on Black Friday when the stores don't have great deals is like me hanging lights on a Christmas tree that nobody put up. My tradition only works if the stores fulfill their part of the bargain.
J.Goodwin @ Nov 15th 2008 1:52PM
Indeed, I picked something else, and that thing is nothing.
SimbaDogg @ Nov 15th 2008 4:09PM
big fat nothin here
sponge14 @ Nov 15th 2008 12:27PM
I am not excited about anything, and nothing in the ads I have seen so far makes me even want to think about being at a store at 4am waiting in line.
ryaninc @ Nov 15th 2008 12:30PM
I don't plan on buying anything for myself. Black Friday is a buy-low-to-resell-on-eBay oportunity for me. As such, I will likely pick up a Blu-ray player and see if I can't flip it for a nice profit. :-)
takamaru @ Nov 15th 2008 12:33PM
Ads so far are very weak. I am more excited to see what amazon and other online retailers may be offering.
Multi-format-mayhem @ Nov 15th 2008 12:44PM
The Circuit City pic's a joke?
(what with them filing chapter 11 bankruptcy and all)
squideater @ Nov 15th 2008 4:32PM
You need to brush up on US bankruptcy laws.
Chapter 11 allows the company to reorganize while it tries to become profitable again. It doesn't mean total liquidation of the company's assets.
A recent example is United Airlines. It declared Chapter 11 in December of 2002 and emerged from bankruptcy in February of 2006.
Circuit City will continue to operate some of its branches while it tries to streamline and reorganize its operations. It should still be a good choice for those looking for bargains on Black Friday.
Multi-format-mayhem @ Nov 15th 2008 8:25PM
squideater
Actually I'm well aware of what chapter 11 bankruptcy means.
I'm also well aware that some companies can and have returned from it and back to some sort of health.
My comment tho was based on those events and in the context of the current economic climate.
It's hardly a sign of 'rude health', hence why I asked if they were joking.
US retail sales numbers just took a record dive and US unemployment just hit a 14yr high, in case you haven't heard.
The outlook is absolutely not that things are just about to turn a corner for the better any time soon either.
I think it's a valid question, if none too serious.
With Circuit City just asking for chapter 11 & retail sales off plumbing the subterranean depths for the next 'x' number of months is a pic showing a CC store surrounded by a stack of people a (mean) joke?
I bet it's totally hilarious to any full-time CC employees right now, eh?
Shadowguitar @ Nov 15th 2008 12:47PM
I'll probably stay home this year, but I am planning on using the power of the INTERNET to snag some deal on a Blu-Ray player. Maybe a PS3, maybe not. All depends on the price.
Jnetty @ Nov 15th 2008 12:57PM
Nothing so far, none of the specials are really specials. I guess I try to snag some sleep instead.
nick @ Nov 15th 2008 1:02PM
Nothing. We're toning it way down this year. Not planning on picking anything up on Black Friday.
DJ @ Nov 15th 2008 1:13PM
Shouldn't a bottle of Scotch and a straight razor be an option?
DJ @ Nov 15th 2008 1:15PM
Seriously though, I planning to pick up at least one more, maybe two Blu-ray players and snagging a several BR discs at $7.99 to $14.99 that have been advertised.
scyber @ Nov 15th 2008 1:19PM
Looking for a 32" HDTV for the bedroom. But the deals for that size don't look too good so far.
RazorD @ Nov 15th 2008 1:21PM
"I'm not from America so don't have a black friday :(" should be an option, too.
kastonie @ Nov 15th 2008 8:59PM
man that sucks for you....you should move here...this is the greatest freaking country on earth....seriously...
United States FTW....
J.Goodwin @ Nov 15th 2008 10:11PM
Psyche!
h0mi @ Nov 15th 2008 1:38PM
Some DVDs and blu-rays. Hardware is gonna have to wait till February.
J.Goodwin @ Nov 15th 2008 1:54PM
This is a good idea actually. Retail is going to be so boned this year that there are going to be massive clearances in the post Christmas period, and it's likely to be bad enough to continue to February. We're talking 50% drops here, I expect.
L3 @ Nov 15th 2008 2:20PM
128Gig iPhone, please.
Jiles McCoy @ Nov 15th 2008 3:33PM
None of the electronics deals look good. I'd like a nice 52" plasma/LCD but I haven't seen anything to push me over the edge. I'll probably buy an air compressor and some small tools I need.
Rob @ Nov 15th 2008 3:52PM
How about "staying in bed" for an option? After all, I don't think any retailers has convinced me to freeze my behind for a great deal yet.
Charles @ Nov 15th 2008 5:50PM
sleep
Ryan C @ Nov 15th 2008 6:57PM
A new HDTV.
David @ Nov 17th 2008 9:36PM
I'm looking for a Universal Remote
Hed @ Nov 15th 2008 7:17PM
Wait a few days after Christmas........and early January, after the predicted drop in retail this year, stores country wide will be dumping inventory like mad.
nathan @ Nov 15th 2008 7:41PM
I chose the "nothing" option as well. Oops! I mean that is what I would have chosen.
nathan @ Nov 15th 2008 8:19PM
Actually, if the OPPO Blu-Ray is out by then, I'll be buying it, but I think that will actually be after Christmas.
Mike @ Nov 15th 2008 8:09PM
I'm hoping for some heavily discounted Circuit City stock
Peter F @ Nov 16th 2008 2:26PM
It already is pretty cheap.
Stevo @ Nov 17th 2008 6:02PM
the circuit city mewrchandise is not all that discounted... ive been to my store (South Bend, IN, it's closing...) and it hasn't had anything better than 20% off... i want to get a floor model of the ipod touch, but so far its only 5% off :(
Rob78 @ Nov 15th 2008 8:54PM
The Vudu box is the only HD purchase I'm making this winter. With the free credit back from best buy I should be set for movies well into 2009.
David S @ Nov 16th 2008 10:02AM
Just as an FYI, any part of the movie credit you don't use within 4 months expires. Then you're stuck with paying for your content.
Bennie @ Nov 15th 2008 9:14PM
Some Zzzzzs!
JBDragon @ Nov 15th 2008 10:38PM
Like most years, I'll be working that Friday and Saturday. I don't remember the last time I actually had the 4 days off. By the time I get off work, get home and change and go out and look, any of the good deals are long gone, sold out. Hell I'd like to at least sleep in a little. I really do hate shopping and going out in the morning to shop, no thanks. Maybe if Amazon has something to good to pass up I'll buy something if they still have it in stock, if not, well I saved some money! Really, not a great loss. There really isn't something I NEED to get.
Peter @ Nov 15th 2008 11:58PM
I would be buying tons of stuff, but the Black Friday deals this year suck! I haven't seen a single worthwhile deal. Looks like the only thing I will be buying is clothes and a 32GB iPod touch 2G.
rv @ Nov 16th 2008 12:34AM
Man, this bf sucks. I was looking for deals on gps, digital cameras, wireless mouse, and external hd. So far, I have found nothing. I could probably buy those all online for cheaper right now then a sale price on bfriday.
DVD4ME @ Nov 16th 2008 2:20AM
We ALL need everyone here to go out and open their wallets and spend, it's the stay at home, I'm not spending at the moment mentality that is going to make this recession bite even harder.
The down turn is increased by the negative "wait and see" way of thinking, spending money, and in the process keeping us all employed by doing so, is the only way out of this mess.
David S @ Nov 16th 2008 10:06AM
THe msmart thing for consumers would be to nt spend money they don't have or not spend money they already spent (ie credit card purchases). If the country got itself out of its individual and collective debt, then we'll be better off in the long run. For many people, borrowing against the future is betting against yourself. Even if you win, you lose.
LonnieDvD @ Nov 16th 2008 11:24AM
My spending money for this year went to my new Laptop, so I'm not buying anything on Black Friday. I might look for an HDTV next year, but I'm done spending this year.
t3yf5g @ Nov 16th 2008 12:54PM
Wireless N router for $40 and a USB Digital tuner for $20. And a spare $40 for an impulse buy. I've been keeping this $100 hidden from my wife for like 3 weeks!
mntwister @ Nov 16th 2008 3:39PM
I think I will snag the Panasonic BD-35 player. I already own a PS3, the first 60gb model which plays all PS2 games, so to give that machine less use and wear, the BD-35 looks like a pretty nice blu-ray player, and I have the Denon 3808 receiver so I can bitstream the new sound codecs. I am just looking for the best price on it.
mntwister @ Nov 16th 2008 3:42PM
I forgot to add, I am not one of those who will get up at 5am and wait out in the Minnesota cold to buy something, so I'dd have to find the best sale price that isn't a Black Friday deal. The last 3 years everytimeI have gone they have been out of what I wanted anyway. Sometimes I wonder just how many of these specials they actually buy....and set them next to a model that is a little more expensive and say "sorry we sold them all." Not worth the aggravation.
reallynotnick @ Nov 16th 2008 11:11PM
Where's the stuck working at Best Buy from 10a-7p option? Oh well, at least I lucked out as I don't have to get up for a 5a shift!
To all those camping outside of BB in the Midwest cold, you are crazy. ;P
