Onkyo finally launches $599 DV-BD606P "pro" Blu-ray player

Onkyo's had a long journey from HD DVD to Blu-ray, first giving an indication that it would produce a BD deck of its own this past February. This summer, we'd heard that the player would set buyers back a few bills, but that was back when players were all selling for a few bills. Now, the DV-BD606P has been introduced as a "professional" player, which essentially means that it's rack-mountable and needlessly expensive. It boasts all the usual suspects -- 1080p output, Dolby TrueHD / DTS-HD Master Audio decoding, DVD upconversion, Profile 1.1 support and an HDMI 1.3a port -- but we don't see anything in particular that justifies the $599 MSRP. Good luck marketing this one, Onkyo.

Now Onkyo has two Blu-ray models for $599 that are both 100% identical to the Insignia that's $199 at Best Buy.

With friends like Onkyo, the BDA doesn't need enemies.

Yeah, looking at the article itself, there appears to be a mismatch. The "Features" list says that the Onkyo bitstreams DTS HD MA (and DD+), whereas Murph's write-up claims it decodes them.

That said, this is a box designed to fit into a rack. You'd generally hook the thing up to a suitable receiver. Sure, you can use an older receiver with a BD player that decodes the newer codecs and sends them via analog, but I have to admit to feeling this kind of thing should stay digital until the very last moment, and requiring it be sent digitally to a receiver isn't a bad thing.

Still, at only $600, and with only the purchase of a suitable HDTV and a $500+ AV Receiver required to make use of it, this truly is evidence that Blu-ray's becoming the popular, affordable, format we all want it to be.

HAHAHAHAHA! Ha ha ha ha ha! *snort* Woohoohoohoohahahaha!

According to the onkyopro website, it doesn't do any decoding on board, rather it bitstream DD Plus, TrueHD, DTS-MA via HDMI.

And squiggleslash, it really doesn't matter what is decoding the audio, the player or the receiver. If the player decodes, it will output a LPCM stream (up to 7.1) via HDMI which the receiver will see, and understand perfectly fine. (The PS3 decodes and outputs this way) The only downside is no pretty DTS MA light will light up on the receiver, and it will say LPCM 7.1/5/1 or something similar. But you still get the full sound out of it.

Ankur - yeah, I was forgetting that group of receivers that do not decode the newer codecs but can extract audio from HDMI. I was thinking more of the choice between the older receivers whose only digital connection is SPDIF, and the newer ones that do HDMI and decoded the new codecs. Are there that many receivers though in that middle tier?

You can have Profile 2.0 and internal decoding, but any "pro" line has to have rs-232, or some kind of Home Automation control interface.

Yes, I'm so glad I can finally look at a high-end blu-ray player and just appreciate it for what it is instead of thinking about how expensive BD players are. Because they no longer are. It's the discs that we need to complain about now.
