How much did they cost, which devices do they play on, which stores can you buy them from, are their restrictions on which devices you can play on, how do you play them on other devices, how do you lend them to friends, can you sell them on when you are done, what happens if the device activation service is shutdown, how much is your unlimited broadband package? etc.

Digital downloads are convenient if you have uncapped high speed broadband and want to rent a movie. After all, who cares about DRM or the best audio/video quality for a rental which will expire in 24 hours. They're not so hot if you actually want to own a movie. I'm not sure if you consider ownership "quaint" or not, but digital downloads are a long way off supporting ownership.

DrXym

Comments on Blu-ray holiday primer gets you informed

I'm paying $50 a month for a 1 MB/s of bandwidth. It is all I can get right now. There is noway I can move to downloads. I will be picking up movies on BD this christmas for sure.

ChadT84

Comments on Blu-ray holiday primer gets you informed

So you must really love the studios, you pay them $10-$20 for bits. When I give someone $10-$20 I expect some type of goods in return. Not just a file that could be wipped out by a virus on my CPU(even software companies still put pgrms on disc). Oh wait I forgot I could just back up my HD movies onto external HDD right?? Then I could take them and play them on other ppl's HTPC's right? How silly of my to forget that HTPC's are taking market share from DVD players right now..... oh wait that's BD players......

rob

Comments on Blu-ray holiday primer gets you informed

You know I agree with you to some point on ownership. Downloads that are limited to one device are not the smartest of purchases. I use Vudu right now, I rent HD titles for 5.99 (actually 3.99 for catalogue titles, SD rentals start at 99c).

Buying movies on disc (especially with the inflated cost of blu-ray) is a false economy. Trust me, I own thousands. My need to buy was driven by the fact I could access anything from my library at any time I felt like watching it. Well, guess what, I have access to a library of 10,000 plus movies right now over the net and I don't feel much of a desire to keep buying discs.

Plus the concept of 'ownership' you describe is something of a fallacy. You don't own the movie the studios do, you own a digital copy on a DVD or blu-ray with very, very limited rights on how, when and where you are allowed to watch it. Read the warnings at the start!

Rob78

Comments on Blu-ray holiday primer gets you informed

@ChadT84: Wow, that sucks. Movie downloads are bleeding edge stuff, you can't expect it to be accessible to everyone straight away. Give it a few years and the infrastructure will be better, until then I guess I can understand that a lot of people will be sticking to the old fashioned tech...

Rob78

Comments on Blu-ray holiday primer gets you informed

Rob78 @ Nov 7th 2008 11:42AM

"I use Vudu right now, I rent HD titles for 5.99 (actually 3.99 for catalogue titles, SD rentals start at 99c). "

Each? Ouch...I can appreciate the convenience, but I think I'd rather just wait the day it takes to get my Netflix in the mail. If someone had a DD service that was $40-50/month and allowed full access to the entire HD/SD catalog they had available on "hard copy", I would seriously consider switching...even at the cost of a little (and I mean little! :-) ) bit of quality. Until then, there's no cost benefit for me to switch. Know what I mean?

daaper

Comments on Blu-ray holiday primer gets you informed

Yeah, I hear ya but I got tiered off the "very-long-wait" for every thing in high def at netflix.
