I have family that have Netflix and so I have used some of the streaming content under there account. I do like the streaming content and wish that Blockbuster could get something like that. Mainly being that my fiance has TERRIBLE taste in movies so I refuse to let her onto my Netflix account. They both have their ups and downs. We are grandfathered in at Blockbuster for unlimited in-store exchanges on our 3 at a time plan which is really nice for those times when we don't like any of the movies we have and need instant gratification. That is the only upside of Blockbuster though.

The ability to stream on so many of my devices now with Netflix is fantastic. Granted I am not an avid user of that service, once the HD streaming is on my Xbox I'm sure I will use it more. However, the main reason I am a big proponent of Netflix over the "other guy" is that I feel the selection of Blu-Ray movies available at Netflix is much greater. Sometimes I do get long lead times which annoys me, but overall I am very happy with their service. I do not have the good fortune of Brooks of same day service (would be nice considering the post office where my Netflix place is is across the street) but I do get very fast turnaround anyway.

If it were not for the unlimited in-store exchanges at Blockbuster we most likely would have cancelled that service and simply upped our Netflix account for more DVDs.

PinkySmallz

Comments on Ask Engadget HD: What's the best movie rental service?

You clearly have too much money. I have a three at a time account and I setup three queues. One for me so I always get a great movie. One for my wife so she can always get those terrible movies she watches. And a final queue for the kids which is ratings restricted and weighted towards kids genre movies. This way we all always have something we like.

The only problem is the "Watch Now" feature only works with the main queue, mine. So my movie preferences get skewed and I have to add movies for my kids and wife to my watch now list that I don't want to see. Hopefully they will fix that before the 360 player becomes available this month. That way my kids can watch their movie on the 360, the wife on her macbook and me on my mbp

James T

Comments on Ask Engadget HD: What's the best movie rental service?

Netflix!

I was with Blockbuster Online for about a year but I finally had to bail. That evidently was too good of a deal because Blockbuster started to limit that to only a few times a month. I eventually took a break from Blockbuster when finals came around. After I graduated and had more time, I decided to try Netflix out. I liked the price and the turn-around time initially, but with their new streaming service, I'm sold. While Blockbuster used to give me super fast turn-around by letting me go to the store and get something, Netflix has beaten that by letting me get what I want instantly.

On another note, I suspect that Netflix is successfully planning world domination. They'll include more and more material on their service, start to have TV shows and movies right when they're released, sports games will eventually stream realtime. The price will go up a bit, and commercials will eventually be added here and there (with the potential of a higher tier to skip commercials). In the end, we will achieve the holy-grail of media.

It's going to come eventually, and I think Netflix is making smart decisions that might make them the ones to bring it to us.

fuxuepeng

Comments on Ask Engadget HD: What's the best movie rental service?

Netflix has a significantly larger selection and streaming, but Blockbuster's in-store exchange sealed the deal for us. I have 3 out at a time, so i also get streaming. The streaming is great and have been using for a while. So it's pretty continuous. I have had this in 2 locations, both Mass, and it took the same time. Day 1: Send, Day2:Netflix receives and sends a new one, Day3: it arrives. Pretty quick. Well Walmart rental was bought out by Netflix so I was back with them again. When I got my Playstation 3 with Blu-ray, Netflix was taking forever to send any in that format so I signed up for Blockbuster trial account to see which would send Blu-ray faster. Blockbuster won so I switched to them. Right after I switched to Blockbuster, Netflix started their online watching program. After a short time....you guessed it, I switched back to Netflix to try out their online service. After all this, my opinion is that Netflix is much faster at getting my movies to me and the availability of Blu-ray has increased. It took me almost 3 times as long to get movies in the mail. I would exchange them instore on a Tuesday morning to get some new releases, and they wouldnt ship out more movies from my "Q" until Thrusday or Friday. I tolerated it simply because I could get the new releases 100% by going to the store. The last straw came when they raised the prices to over $20 and limited the amount of instore exchanges. So I quit there and went back to Netflix, and I am so glad that I did. Not only do they have a very quick turnover but they also have a wider selection especially if you like a lot of independent films. Oh and they are cheaper :)

Brandon

Comments on Ask Engadget HD: What's the best movie rental service?

I'm another long time Blockbuster Online customer, I have been very happy with the service and really like my ability to exchange movies at a retail store. I have a grandfathered 2 out at a time unlimited in-store exchanges and a free movie/game rental coupon each month account. I am an avid movie watcher but I only rent new releases and some TV series'. I've been totally spoiled by blu-ray so streaming video that clocks in at slightly under SD resolution doesn't appeal to me especially if they don't carry the new releases that I'm looking for. I purchase and collect any older movies that I want to see again and I have a voracious video game appetite. Luckily, my local Blockbuster has recently expanded both their Blu-Ray section and video game section so if I come in on release day, I can usually nab pretty much anything that's new. They have pretty much everything that I'm looking for when I have movies to swap or a coupon for a free game rental. All for less than $17 a month.
