Larcenists get a cheap Blu-ray player (the illegal way)

Can't wait for Black Friday? Neither could two suspects in Virginia Beach. Reportedly, a crafty duo entered a local Walmart late last week, with one placing a Samsung Blu-ray player in her cart while the other placed a DVD / VCR combo unit in his cart. Once that was complete, the two met in the pet section, swapped the unwanted DVD / VCR unit out for a Blu-ray deck and proceeded to checkout. The cute couple paid for dog food and a rather inexpensive DVD / VCR player, yet arrived home with dog food and an improperly boxed Blu-ray player. Moral of the story? Blu-ray adoption would clearly soar if manufacturers would just price the players right. (We kid, we kid.)

I'm surprised there's even room in their double wide to fit and HD tv and BR player! Must have moved the NASCAR furniture around a bit!

You gotta hand it to 'em. Although I hope they get caught, they got away with this for now. Maybe Sony ought to run Walmart ads proclaiming consumers are willing to go to jail for the new disc format in order to spur sales. Just don't give them any ideas on how to get around the gouging that occurs at the checkout counter.

Yea, somone on COPS a few weeks ago got busted for stealing a couple of Blu-Ray players. I thougth to myself 'we must have past some societal threshold when BD is so mainstream that people are ripping them off.

Why the "We kid. We kid." CYA? Analysts and consumers have been saying since the beginning of the format war that price is the main factor right now and that current BD player prices aren't there yet, nor are the prices for Blu-ray movies. Blu-ray adoption WOULD clearly soar if the manufacturers would just price the players right! There's no kidding about it!

Darren's saying that people wouldn't have to steal blu-ray players if they were cheaper.That's called a joke.

What is being missed though...is when some Wally World shopper picks up that blu-ray player box with the DVD/VCR combo in it...think they just got a deal with the bonus VCR...

This is why some stores don't allow you to carry your own electronic items through the store or force you to purchase it immediately from the electronics department or possibly even have you pickup the item after checkout. This is certainly not a new problem

Here's my question: They have them on tape doing it. Just how did they get out of the store?
I can't walk into a place without someone instantly asking if they can "help me" (talk about never being able to just browse around). Yet these guys not only swap boxes on a product they also actually get away with it?
I bet an employee also loaned them a tape gun so they could tape the boxes back up also...

What store do you shop at? Almost every place I walk into has so many blind spots, especially Wal Mart, I'd be living it up if I were a thief.

CaptCaveman, I think you're confusing Wal-Mart with most of your typical electronics stores. True, the sales associates are more than annoying in those stores and it would be difficult to pull that heist off in most of the ones I've ever been in, but I think it would be fairly easy to do it in a Wal-Mart or Target type of store (as evidenced by this story).

I've never had a single associate offer to help me in Wal-Mart or Target (which I am thankful for), but I can't get more than 3 steps in most electronics stores without being hassled. It's ridiculous.
