Psystar slaps Apple around, releases Mac clones with Blu-ray / GeForce 9800GT

While suits from Psystar and Apple are currently attempting to work things out via alternative dispute resolution, the former company is doing something the latter company won't: offer OS X-capable machines with built-in Blu-ray and NVIDIA's GeForce 9800GT. Showing no mercy whatsoever in a recent release, Psystar calls Steve Jobs out for his controversial "bag of hurt" comment and proceeds to inform the general public that it's "now shipping" OS X-compatible PCs (better known as Open Computers) with Blu-ray optical drives and the GeForce 9800GT GPU. Based on pricing figures gathered from the company's website, a 6x Blu-ray writer is a $310 upgrade over a dual-layer DVD burner, while the 512MB GeForce 9800GT will set you back $200 more than the 8600GT. Whatcha got to say now, Steve? Huh? Huh?

What's the point? There is no software that will reliably playback BDs.

Really, this is getting as bad as the "Why doesn't Toshiba release a sub-$100 Blu-ray player?" BS that EHD keeps pushing. (Answer: BECAUSE THEY LOST A BILLION ON HD DVD ALREADY AND WANT TO RETURN TO PROFITABILITY, IDIOTS!)

Yes, you can physically attach a Blu-ray drive to a Mac. No, this is not the same as the Mac supporting Blu-ray. The only way to make a Mac support Blu-ray is to get hold of DumpHD and an H.264 player app. Maybe you can persuade those nice folks at SlySoft to come up with a Mac version of AnyDVD for ya.

Seriously. Are all the people who are so angry about this BD situation actually going to go out and buy this thing? I think not.

Without movie playback the burning function alone is NOT worth the price. I have toast 9 which will burn to BluRay, but that doesn't mean that function is worth spending the money on a second drive for my Mac Pro. Even if Apple offered it I wouldn't buy it. Blu-Ray is for my PS3 and TV. I don't need it on my computer.

Thankfully, the comments on this site are always more civil than Engadget.

The key paragraph is

The ability to burn 25-gigabyte discs is a feature that can help users in media editing or enterprise environments keep archives of large file sets. Our systems, regardless of configured operating system, can now provide this functionality."

Notice the last sentence - "Our systems regardless of configured operating system can now provide (data backup via BDR)"

They should have said, we included a BD Optical drive to take advantage of the ability to make 25GB data backups. Movie support is a possible future release.

But when you consider the fact that you can buy a 1TB+ drive for less than the increased price tag that writes 10x faster than a BD-R drive and you don't have to buy $12 discs every time you want to use it BR isn't much of a back up media.

Shouldn't Job's think about how being able to get a mac clone from another company helps apple's market share? I know Jobs wants it all, but you can't ever have it all. Seems like this helps to boost the mac. I don't know if they are built as well as a mac, but you have that problem in the pc side anyway. Of course that has always given apple good control over their product too...

I think your right they should make the fact that it doesn't play movies stand out better.

Perhaps you are right and a movie won't playback on Mac OS X, even with an HDCP compliant video card and monitor and tv.

BUT>>> the dig here is that this is perhaps the exact configuration that PEOPLE WANT.

a mid range tower, with upgradable option for Blu-Ray Burning. Would love one standard which is BD reading, and Superdrive for CD/DVD.

The thing is this lil company is offering what apple won't, an affordable midrange tower with power and great graphics.

Bring it on Apple, Bring the stuff your consumers want !! please i don't want to buy a third party manufactured hackintosh.

Offer up some good stuff at a mid range price. Please apple
