Blu-ray Disc sales up 396% year to date in UK
Looking for candidness? We aren't too sure we believe these numbers, but a new writeup from Hollywood Reporter has it that Blu-ray Disc sales in the United Kingdom are up a mind-melting 396% for the year to date. Yep, 1.5 million units have been moved, which -- if accurate -- gives a clear indication of just how quickly consumers on that side of the pond are siding with Blu in this post-format war world. Purportedly, the figures were derived from the British Video Association, and the report with this nugget also had data regarding the upward trends in both DVD sales and theater attendance. But hey, when there's all of five or so HD channels to watch, it's not too shocking to see citizens get their high-def fix via another method.[Via GameFocus, image courtesy of WikInvest]

Given that there are more than 1.5 million blu-ray players (Including PS3s) in the UK, doesn't the yearly sale of 1.5 million BD discs sound low. Only the Blu-tards here at EngadgetHD would trumpet this news as a win for the BDA. HOW SAD!!!!!

Yes, surely if that figure includes PS3s the sales are dismal?
And FYI, I have 24 HD channels, but no Blu Ray.

Surely not.
BTW, I has a sekret.... your HD channels are compressed.
Maff @ Oct 21st 2008 2:49AM
compressed?
wow, and I thought it used a lossless codec giving better than Blu-ray results
compressed? really?
I bet people didn't know that
of course they're compressed, all digital TV is compressed. UK HD has a higher bitrate than US TV but we use h.264 where as the majority of US use MPEG2 so even if ours was the same bitrate or slightly less it would still look better

@Maff: blu-ray codecs will always look better than broadcast h.264. This has nothing to do with UK vs. US codecs in use. Bragging that one has 24 HD channels when the topic is about Blu sales is meaningless. End of story.
