DViCO's TViX-HD 6500 eats Blu-ray rips for breakfast, spits 'em out via HDMI
Nearly two full years after DViCO introduced its TiVX 5010-P HDTV recorder, along comes a new duo in the line to finally up the ante. But it's not the infantile TViX R-2230 ($399; pictured) that we're really interested in -- though it can play back ripped VOB / ISO files. Rather, it's the $599 TViX-HD 6500, which also includes support for playing back Blu-ray backups via HDMI. We'll spare you the legal spill, but for those too frightened to potentially scratch their precious Blu-ray Discs, this looks to be the unit for you. So far as specs go, you'll find HDMI 1.3, component, S-Video and composite jacks, support for a smorgasbord of file formats, a USB port for loading up media from flash drives / external HDDs and an optional digital TV tuner to boot. Why do we get the feeling both of these things will be next to impossible to locate in the US?

Haha. S-video and composite jacks. Awesome. Because after I shell out $600 for this baby, $150 for a blu-ray drive for my PC, and maybe $200 for hard drives to store a blu-ray library, plus oodles for the movies themselves, I really want to downscale it to 480i resolution and watch on my grainy old 20" CRT.
Seriously, what were they thinking?

It also has component and HDMI jacks.
I would imagine they were thinking "Sometimes someone is going to watch this on a non-HDTV, so it'd be nice if they could unplug it, take it to the bedroom with the SDTV, and plug it in there."

Yes, maybe you are right, but that has to be a pretty small minority of people willing to spend $600 on a piece of tech like this before replacing the TV in the bedroom with a medium sized LCD for about the same money.

Is this an updated release of the 6500? Hasn't this been out for about a year now? The 41xx/51xx series from a couple years ago can also play Blu Ray rips.
As for the S-video, etc. ports, the Tvix boxes play all kinds of media files (avi, mp4, mkv, etc), not just blu-ray, so for some people it might make sense.

What's the benefit of these boxes over the Popcorn Hour?

better compatibility, i do believe I'm getting one of these. Anyone happen to know the hardware powering this badboy?

What format does it play that the popcorn hour doesn't for hundreds less?
I do like the digital TV option though.

I think you should spend its price on a fantastic Blu-ray player like this " http://inanotechnology.blogspot.com/2008/10/panasonic-dmr-bw500-isnt-normal-blu-ray.html "
