Analysts say HDTV sales could decline in current economy, snow could fall in Montana
Hey, the analysts have to find something to talk about, right? As the Blue Chips rise and fall like the tides, so have bobbed the reports regarding how this economy will affect HDTV sales. Just a week ago, one survey found that 73% of non-HDTV owners were still forging ahead with plans to pick up an HDTV within the next 12 months, and given the record low prices we're apt to see on Black Friday, we don't half blame 'em. Merely 24 hours later, out popped another report backing the claim. Now, however, Craig Moffett, an analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein & Co., is suggesting that the current credit crunch could already be eating away at TV sales. Or, you know, maybe all these intelligent souls out there understand that massive sales are just over a month away. How's that for analysis?[Image courtesy of StarTribune]

Most of the restaurants my wife and I eat at are deserted these days. We wandered by a jeweler yesterday to fix my wife's bracelet, and the guy there made the point that his sales have plummeted, with virtually nobody coming in for anything but engagement and wedding rings.
I'm sure the sales will cause a bump, but I suspect interest in Black Friday will be lower than usual. This is not really a time large numbers of people are thinking about big screen TVs.

Who has not been taking note of the steep fall in economic activity?
The record debts, liabilities & bank bail-outs alone are never off the news these days - and the coming recession (whilst connected, obviously) is not quite the same thing and has yet to get as bad as it's going to get.
Growth in most of the west is now zero, negative and/or falling sharply
(and the indicators always lag behind real events as they are by nature reactive).
The only weird thing about any of this is how the analyst's projections are so late in the day and only now beginning to say that a huge fall-off in trade is about to hit.
Traders have known it for months.

My local restaurants are deserted too. Worse, very few people are buying the items that my company sells. HDTV sales might very well drop, but many people are setting up home theatres.
