I do not think the average low-end cowsumer shopping on a tight budget and looking at this product even knows the difference between Profile 1.1 and 2.0. Besides, being poor/cheap means doing without certain benefits in life, no?

The blindly devoted won't want to hear it but $230 for a no-name brand doesn't seem much like the messianic news some are longing for.
Ditto that Magnavox piece of junk (which contrary to the claims of some here did not review very well).
(and BTW has anyone been catching the recent reports of failing blue lasers yet?
Anyone want to bet on the, er, 'quality' of the blue lasers in these, relatively speaking, cheapo units?)
Anyhoo this is not news to anyone who has been watching any of this.
HD DVD already showed us the reality here for anyone who cares to recognise it.
Nothing much is going on until name-branded players hit sub $100 and most movies are less than $20, then it'll start to happen.
But it'll only be a start and it'll be a start in the context of being amongst the minority of an already minority of HD TV owners.
People are being very choosy over what they bother with in HD movies.
Even my PS3 owning pals say they are not that bothered and will only buy a movie they know will benefit very obviously from it, otherwise even they are saying cheaper upscaled DVD is 'good enough'.
Especially at current prices.

Should I wade in describing your personal remarks as the bleatings of the blindly deluded?
We can all see what's going on, Blu-ray isn't taking off and a large part of the reason for that was its pricing (but I would bet the house on it now being the looming years of deep recession ahead of us all).
A restricted and very weak line-up of movies would be another reason
(as a non-adolescent I can honestly only find about 6 titles I might buy in additon to the 6 BD movies/music vids I already own).
TBH I find the reflex over-done defensive posturing of the blinkered BD fans amusing.
Sorry to disappoint but I have nothing to feel at all "bitter" about.

Welcome back TT,
While you are certainly entitled to expressing your personal opinion about how BD will fare as a format, how about waiting until the holiday season ends and then seeing how BD actually did. You might certainly be right, but for all the predictions we throw out, you don't know until you know, you know?
Personally, I think that CE manufatures are pricing their players right for this holiday season. $200 to $250 for a name brand player is about right for BD's lifespan as a format. It may not move massive quantities of players, but it will begin to secure a piece of the movie player market. The true test is movie prices, and how willing studios will be to lower their prices.
The economy, despite what some may think, IS a big factor in how this holiday goes overall. Retailers are very worried about it already, so it's pretty much guaranteed that retail sales will be lower (significantly) than in previous years. So that is not good for BD (or any other tech for that matter).
Overall, I feel BD will see some success after the holiday, enough to encourage studios and CE corps to continue supporting it well into 2009.

We shall indeed see in the coming months - although if the BDA insist on refusing to release verifiable numbers (and with no direct competitor what on earth are they afraid of?) it will remain wide open to conjecture.
Having seen the (astounding) first serious steps to the UK nationalising the main banks today
(which itself follows the effective nationalisation of a corp global giant like AIG in the US)
I think this coming recession/slump is going to kill any fledgling expensive CE products as consumers retreat to what they have and know.
I just don't see this as a period to seriously expect Blu-ray to do anything significant......and I expect it to be protracted too.
Have you seen the vast sums the Govs all over the world are shelling out?! They are debts that will hang around for a very long time.
Oh, and who is this TT character you speak of?
If he (or she or they) sounds like me then great, what a shame he (or she or they) are not still around.

If BD is profitable to both studios and CE manufactures, then it would be a win for the format, regardless of how significant we as a public perceive it as. I hope it succeeds as a format because it means continued support and improvement of both movie titles and players. Competition on the hardware side will bring out even better and cheaper players. And studios will want to increase revenue by offering more titles on BD.
