Lite-On intros 6x iHES206 internal Blu-ray reader / DVD writer
If you were hoping to grab a new Blu-ray writer to slap inside of that new tower, you'll be sorely disappointed with Lite-On's new iHES206. The 6x optical drive simply reads Blu-ray Discs, but it will handle writing of blank CD and DVD media. As for speeds, it can digest single-layer BD-R / RE / ROM discs at 6x (dual-layer at 4x) while writing DVD±R at 16X, DVD±R DL / DVD+RW at 8x, DVD-RW at 6x and DVD-RAM at 12x. It's on track for a November release in Europe for a manageable €139 ($189).

Since when is $189 for a pc driver "manageable?" You must be kidding me.
But then again, I didn't go on vacation with the AIG folks.

Hey, it's a step in the right direction.
While I (as I've said before, so let's not dwell on it) don't think BD has much of a future as a movie distribution system, I think it has real potential for data storage in the medium term, especially if the multilayer technologies that are being demoed are made viable. More BD readers = more infrastructure ready for use for when writers and media prices come down in price.

I don't know why the posting was done in a negative way.
Alot of people may not need to burn BD discs, but would be very happy to read them. and be able to burn Cd's and DVD's.
this is a good price and macine for alot of people.
just wonder if it is mac compatible, so i can put it in a mac pro

Complete and utter garbage. LG has a combo HD-DVD/BluRay and DVD writer for $140 that I myself own and can attest to the fact that it plays everything flawlessly!

Now if it wrote BD media for $189....that'd be something to get my panties in a bunch over.

I'm assuming $189 is MSRP. Street price will probably be lower.
