Botched DirecTV software update requiring HR2X STBs to be restarted?
Generally, we'd pass something like this off as just coincidence, but when over 95% of 1,000+ respondents confess to sharing the same issue, we simply can't turn the other cheek. It's assumed that DirecTV botched up a software update early this morning that affected a number of HR2X set-tops. Over at DBSTalk, the vast majority of readers who voluntarily took part in a poll affirmed that at least one of their HR2X units required a restart / reboot this morning. We know there's no real point in asking if you too were affected, but that aside, what was DirecTV attempting to send down? The world may never know.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

That's so strange. My neighbor has one and he asked me to look at it
because it froze. I had to pull the plug out and plug it back in. Then it
froze again an hour later.

Froze an hour later? Great, I just reset my HR-21 because it wouldn't turn on. It better not give me troubles later.

Yeah mine did too. I reset it and watched TV for a bit and turned it off. When I came in later it was froze again. Reset again and so far it's been fine since. Hopefully that's the end of it.

I had to reboot both my HR20's this morning. I figured it was a software update of some kind, glad to know I am not alone!

I ran into the same issue. I woke up and saw my HD DVR was recording. Interested to see what it was, i tried to turn it on and no dice. I unplugged it, ran to the system restart screens and it was up and running. But my wife watched TV later today and when i come home, it was all locked up jones again.
Will there be a fix for this then or something? I'd be rather upset if i have to reset the receiver often.

The wife had to reboot our HR20 yesterday and I had to reset our custom channels. I assumed that it was a software update...

My HR20 was locked up this morning and right as I clicked this link my HR20 just reset itself when I was watching the Sox Rays game in the 7th. Weird!

I don't have an HR2X but I do have an H21 (HD, no DVR) and it froze up over the weekend, either Saturday or Sunday... I can't remember. I woke up and it would turn off and on but would not respond to any remote control or front panel buttons. I had to pull the plug and reset it before I could use it again.
My non-HD receiver was fine.

All of our recievers restarted, the assumption is they backed out whatever change. this happened at 7pm ct.
longhairbilly @ Oct 6th 2008 11:13PM
I also had to restart mine today.
dave @ Oct 7th 2008 12:29AM
HR20-100 was frozen this a.m. 10/6/2008 had to red button restart... about 1 hour later it locked up again... had to red button restart... then this evening 6:55 p.m. it restarted on its own... was up and running a few minutes past 7 pm CST... have had picture shifts and sound volume changes all evening... DVR copies of programs will testify to the tech issues.... last upgrade on July 17...

I had to unplug mine twice to get it to restart. Then a few hours later it restarted again on its own while I had a show paused. Thankfully it had no problems during football tonight.

Both of my HR21 units needed a power cycling to recover. BTW, this is NOT the first time this has happened. In fact, I am surprised that DirecTV doesn't mandate this for all of their products to be forcibly power cycled at least once per month as they've been having me do this for +7 years now.

This happened to me last night. I got back to my house at around 9:30 or so, and when I turned on the box, it gave me the please wait deal and had to wait for it to download guide info and whatnot.
Hopefully new software will fix that sounds drops that I experience from my H-21 connected to my Onkyo TX-SR705. I had an H20 at before that never had any issues, so I assume the issue is with the H-21.

crash!
George @ Oct 8th 2008 8:15PM
Yes, I too have been having all sort of problems, from watching HD and then in primetime right at 8pm NBC (hd) or CBS(hd) or ABC(hd) become some weird local channel from Ohio non HD! I happen to live in New York City.
I'm having a "tech" come over and "fix" and dish or line? It's really upsetting, but I feel better that I'm not alone. I have hit that reset button and called direct TV over 20 times! (sucks)

I have to reboot my HR21 about once a month. One of the tuners will say searching for signal, I restart it and everything works fine.
