Samsung's BD-P1500 Blu-ray player dips under $200
We want to say that it has begun, but we're still thinking it's a touch early to suggest the $200 barrier is collapsing before our very eyes. Not even 24 hours after Sony's BDP-S300 fell to under $200 at Amazon, Samsung's respectable BD-P1500 has now done the same over at RadioShack. The $299.99 player becomes $199.99 instantly when added to one's cart, and according to the promotional fine print, the additional $100 off will be valid until September 27th. The real question is: will the "sale" be extended?
[Thanks, Shawn]
Update: The player has vanished from the website. Sold out, possibly?

Sure, they may be clearing out old models, but hey it's one more blu-ray player selling under $200, it'll sell, that's what will help the blu-ray format.
shawnmos @ Sep 22nd 2008 9:04AM
This isn't an old model. It's a 1.1 player that can bitstream. According to the guys over at Slickdeals it should be upgradable to 2.0. All you will need is a USB stick to bring it to 1GB.
dj496 @ Sep 22nd 2008 9:28AM
Yes, you're correct it's still their latest model out now. That's even better, the manufacturers are competing a bit.
Chad @ Sep 22nd 2008 10:08AM
Looks like the price has already gone back up.
DEEZNUTZ @ Sep 22nd 2008 10:09AM
Well now that we're starting to see players being sold at the $200 range, we can expect the same bunch of whiners will now bitch that players should be $99 to $150...
And it's not a Sylvania/Magnavox/Insignia/Funai either.
I also saw one of the Sony's on Amazon for $199 this weekend. Tell's me BD is serious about growing their marketshare on standalones this holiday season. It's not the PS3 being the cheapest on the block anymore (though still better than most of the standalones) so folks have better choices.

The Sony player for $200 is an old model, they are clearancing it... or should we say FIRESALE?!?
While players getting close to hit $200 in retail for current players is nice, if BDA was serious, they would drop the prices of the discs.
mntwister @ Sep 22nd 2008 11:37AM
Zargon, the price of the discs is determined by the studios, NOT the BDA!!!!
zargon @ Sep 22nd 2008 12:13PM
Thanks for the correction, but I meant everyone who is involved with Blu-ray.

I'm guessing that once the Profile 2.0 players are at this sweet spot(probably another year or so) more and more people will buy BD players.......
I think that AVERAGE consumers are starting to wise up and after getting burned on the HD-DVD players they got last Christmas for $100 are doing their research and realizing that the non profile 2.0 players are just not worth it at this time.
J.Goodwin @ Sep 22nd 2008 10:44AM
At least there was nothing significantly functionally deficient about the HD-DVD players in terms of being able to play software (at least nothing that a firmware update wouldn't fix). There were the 1080i and lack of analog outputs things, but that's not an issue playing content.
Anyone else notice that HD-DVD firmware has magically become version 3.0 at some point over the last six or seven months?
The Aggie CEO @ Sep 22nd 2008 11:15AM
yea I think that firmware update came out like a few weeks after HD-DVD demise........

It'll be interesting to see what these $200 standalone players are going to do to the PS3 market.
The Aggie CEO @ Sep 22nd 2008 10:48AM
I dont think it'll be much of a dent to the PS3s because a PS3 is getting more and MORE games, and its the most future proof BD player on the market.......
if people do their research then they will know the PS3 with Profile 2.0 support is STILL the best deal out there........
Mike S @ Sep 22nd 2008 11:13AM
No PS3 for me. I don't want a game machine and I need analog 5.1 our for my older receiver I do not want to upgrade due to budget constraints.

I called on it - it was an error on the site. I knew it was too good for that price and should have purchased it.
squiggleslash @ Sep 22nd 2008 12:21PM
Yeah, I see they've actually removed the item completely from their website. You now get redirected to a search page that reports the item can't be found.
horngreen @ Sep 22nd 2008 3:06PM
$200 let alone a $300 price for player is crazy.
Evan @ Sep 22nd 2008 5:17PM
You must not remember the early days of DVD.
Achilles @ Sep 22nd 2008 4:02PM
It's on the Amazon site but not for $200.00. Radio Shack does not have it on it's website. I don't think they are sold out but seems more like an error for this player on the Radio Shack site.
chiwax @ Sep 23rd 2008 7:18AM
I wouldn't buy a PS3 cause I have my 360 and that's enough for me. Nothing against the PS3 at all but I wasn't going to get it just to solve the Blu issue. I looked at maybe getting a Dell Studio Hybrid but decided the purchase wouldn't have been smart since I am running four home computers(their not ALL mine) at the moment. I really couldn't pull the trigger on a $299 standalone Blu player. As soon as I read that the Sony was $199 on Amazon I ordered it with 2-day shipping. I guess that was my price...Q
