There really needs to be that option, even if I'm the only one who would pick it. That's still a very valid reason not to be sold on other blu-ray features. Maybe if there was a real benefit from going with blu-ray I would start buying into it, but having a higher resolution and better audio aren't "real" benefits. Sure, having a thinner wallet to sit on can keep you from having back problems, but I don't keep my wallet in my back pocket anyways. Plus, it can't much thinner either, so spending more on movies won't help me.

Garst

Comments on Poll: Are you sold on Blu-ray Profile 2.0?

I'm personally biased being stuck with my 1.1 player, but I sincerely doubt I'm missing much. Most 2.0 features I've seen are trivia games, "interactivity" with other disc holders, and other more social networking-type features that I think transition poorly to movie watching. Plus, where's the replay value? How many times are you going to complete the same damn trivia game or quiz? I have friends over to watch movies all the time, and I suppose watching with "friends" over the internet might substitute if it was my only recourse, but the intent is almost solely to watch the MOVIE. Not the extras, not the behind the scenes stuff. I appreciate those extras and I find it stingy of studios not to include them, but most of the worthwhile extras are all provided with 1.1. Profile 2.0 benefits are really hard to sell in my opinion, unless they start distributing additional content only through profile 2.0 means. To wrap it up, 2.0 is not worth it in my book.

As a side note, I've been of the opinion that there haven't been many 2.0 players out there primarily because there are not that many 2.0 discs available. Of course manufacturers will save cost by not including the necessary specs to support 2.0, plus the consumer is likely to never use 2.0 features if they're unaware of them. Frankly, I also think BDA might charge more for profile 2.0 licenses to further promote the PS3 preference in the Blu-ray marketing scheme. That's why I think the "cheaper" Blu-ray players are all 1.1 or less, cuz Sony won't allow a 2.0 player to undercut the $400 PS3. Food for thought here, just my speculation.

John

Comments on Poll: Are you sold on Blu-ray Profile 2.0?

can't speak for profile 2.0 myself buy i sure enjoyed some of the online content on my hd-dvd's (flame on!)

wreckedchevy

Comments on Poll: Are you sold on Blu-ray Profile 2.0?

I have a PS3. To be honest, I don't think it is the high price of the players that are hindering sales either. I think the average Joe (or Jane, to be PC) would shell out the $300 - 400 for a player if they weren't going to be gouged for the movies to play on them. $25 -30 average for a movie is outrageous, I own 2 Blu-ray movie. I own 40+ HD DVD's but bought nearly all of them after the format died and the movies were sold dirt cheap. If the BDA folks wanted to move more players, lower the price of the movies to around $15. I own 4 HD TV's but only one Blu-Ray player. I wont consider buying any more until the disks are a bit more reasonably priced. With DVD's selling regularly below $10, the average person is not going to pay nearly triple for the same movie, even if it is in higher quality.

Jason

Comments on Poll: Are you sold on Blu-ray Profile 2.0?

Why do I want my Blu-Ray player to call home? You can not however upgrade your HD on the 360 without voiding the warranty, which you can do on the PS3.

Before the PS3 was finalized I read many a post by 360 fans saying there was no way the PS3 would compete, but I argued that releasing your product second was the more powerful position as you saw what you were competing against and could adapt your product accordingly before final release.

Unlike MS, Sony also has something else making it easier to compete, they didn't short their old customers and revenue stream near as much. PS2s are still available and profitable, helping the gaming division not bleed so much as the PS3 gains market share. MS, with it's narrow sited "windows upgrade" mindset, cutoff XBOX sales and games, effectively severing what could have been a good continuing revenue stream these past 3 years. Based on this "Forced upgrade" mindset we can expect the 360 to become a paperweight much sooner than the PS3, that alone would be enough reason for me to choose the PS3.

Mr_Fizzlepop

Comments on Poll: Are you sold on Blu-ray Profile 2.0?

Well..

Look at LOTR: EE editions. That is why I bought two ps3's. They can be updated to whatever comes down the pipe. Prices are going to continue to drop as the holiday season comes up, so I think we'll definitely have more 2.0 content soon!
