It was a pretty big disappointment when
we learned that the Windows Media Center TV Pack (code named
Fiji) didn't include support for the long awaited
DirecTV tuner, and unfortunately this means the smart money is on Windows 7 -- which will probably be out in early 2011 -- but of course this doesn't stop a few assumably uninformed DirecTV CSRs from telling customers it'll be out in November. Although we really have no idea when Microsoft will add native support for DirecTV, we do know it would be highly unusual for Microsoft to release anything without at least a few months of external testing. So with September half way over, it makes it next to impossible to believe we'll see it before the end of 2008. The thing that isn't as clear though, is that for whatever reason, the testers we've spoken to still aren't 100% convinced that the new tuner will require Windows 7, and although it seems like a slim chance, the tuner might just get here before Windows 7 after all, but your guess is as good as ours.

I'm done waiting. Switching to cablecard next week. I really wanted to stay with DirecTV but no computer based DVR solution and the amount of HD compression artifacts are pushing me away.

Is Windows 7 the OS that comes after XP? I can't wait.

Ummm, what is the point of this post. There is no new news in it.
"You're guess is as good as ours?" Not too informative...
Also, what is Windows 2007? Is that Windows Vista, which was made generally available in 2007? Why would Windows 2007 be released in 2011? BTW, current estimates for Windows "7" are for a 2009 release...

Nothing to back this up or anything, other than my gut feelings, but I have a sneaking suspicion that it may still come out either Q4 this year or Q1 next year, and will require a specially licensed piece of software that will come with the tuner that will add the needed functionality onto Vista Media Center.
Just brainstorming here...

I am running Vista Media Center with Dual Cable Cards and Linksys DMA2100 extenders. Let me tell you, if DirecTV tuners are half as buggy as CableCards, they will have issues rolling this to a larger audience. I totally love being able to watch the same show on multiple TV's, and when 2 TB of space is gone, I can just add more. With that said, the bugs need to be flushed out before this is a solution that my parents or even the average consumer can stand.
I can't wait for DirecTV integration, but for now the CableCards will have to do. Even with all of the bugs, there is no way I will ever revert to the crappy DVR's the cable or sat companies tout as great pieces of hardware.
Hurry up Microsoft and DirecTV.....it is 2008 for cryin out loud.

For thos of you that dont know The succesion of windows is something like:
Windows 3.1
Windows 95 + 98 = Windows 4
Windows XP = Windows 5
Windows Vista= Windows 6
Windows ? = Windows 7
BrianK @ Sep 25th 2008 7:53PM
It is actually this way:
Windows for Workgroups 3.1
Windows NT 3.5
Windows NT 4
Windows 2000 (5.0)
Windows XP (5.1)
Windows 2003 (5.2)
Windows Vista/2008 (6.0)
Windows 7
There was a fork in the road after Windows 3.1. There was the consumer Windows 95/98/Me and then there was the business oriented Windows NT. Windows XP was the first OS that combined consumer and business together again, but it was ultimately based off the NT legacy. Windows 7 will probably be more like a 6.1. Basically about the difference of Windows 2000 to Windows XP, which is significant, but not truly a new version.
