Dayton's WHIO-TV shows off digital with dueling political speeches
Though certainly not the first station to use its X.x channels for something other than pixelated weather and re-runs, Dayton, Ohio's WHIO-TV recently showcased what digital TV was all about with simultaneous widescreen broadcasts of local political speeches. Both major party presidential nominees were in the Miami Valley area and speaking at the same time, and rather than being, you know, biased, it choose to provide live uninterrupted coverage of both speeches on DTV channels 7.1 and 7.2. Of note, the speeches weren't used as a DTV test (good choice), but news director David Bennallack did assert that this was a "great opportunity to show viewers how DTV can work for them." On that note, have you applied for your voucher yet? Thanks, Dayton Guy]

Who was on the main channel (.1). The sub-channel wasn't seen (more than likely) on analog cable, satellite and fiber optic. Maybe not even on cable.
Seems like a limited audience for the sub-channel of OTA with digital tuners and maybe cable.
My local CBS station did this with the US Open a few years ago. Ran daytime trash on the main channel and an HD feed of the first two rounds of the US Open on the sub-channel. I asked some of my friends who like golf if they caught it and they didn't even know what a sub-channel was, much less that it existed on our CBS affiliate.

Obama was on 7.1... McCain was on 7.2... Both flipped back and forth on analog 7...
The 7.2 is typically a weather channel and it is available on the lowest basic cable service in almost every area in the Miami Valley so basically everyone has access to it.

Probably because Obama was actually in Dayton, McCain was just south of here. Although McCain had the HD spotlight a week-and-a-half before in Dayton (Go Palin!).
In the morning, either 2.2 or 7.2 loops the local news while the x.1 shows the HD national morning show.
