I had no problems with DirecTV's DVR, but I know the TiVo fanboys will all over this one.

Even though we currently have an HR-21, we'll be ready for one of these when they come out. I wouldn't be surprised if they made it so you could upgrade an HR-20/21 from DirectTV DVR to TiVo based.
It would be nice if going back to TiVo didn't mean losing OTA support or web based scheduling, but added TiVo to Go.

Well since the old DirecTV TiVos could do OTA and web based scheduling, I don't see why the new one wouldn't.

LONG time TiVo owner. LONG time DTV user. Was a sad day when the DTV HD-Tivo became obsolete. The HR20 has been a great receiver, but it's NO TiVo.

Agreed. The biggest problem i've had is that when I'm buffered on a program that I'm watching, and the tuner changes to a new channel to record it, I'm instantly shifted to live mode, AND lost the buffered program i was watching. Lame, DTV. Lame.

Wow - this is great. I have the old TiVo, the old DirecTV Tivo HD, and the new HD DirecTV DVR. The TiVo is still my much loved, much preferred unit. The DirecTV unit works but is clunky and SLOOOOW by comparison. Nice to see it coming our way.

So does this mean it can do the new MPEG4 stuff? I am about to get rid of my HDTivo because I can't get my OTA channels very well on it (renting and can't put up an antena outside) and I have an HR/20 which works great.

Excellent. Now if DirecTV would allow Tivo to support the upcoming DirecTV USB tuner (HDPC-20) on the TivoHD I'd be all set. I'm locked into my TivoHD for 2 more years.

I whole heartedly agree! I've had DirecTV for about 10 years and have seen many, many receivers come and go. I'm STILL holding onto my last DirecTivo box upstairs (non-HD at that), even though it's connected to an HD TV. I just can't let it go. It does such a much better job than the the HR-20 and 21 units I have. Even my HD DirecTivo box was superior.
My only beef with DirecTivo boxes of old was the 30 minutes of recording when paused. ReplayTV allows longer; Dish used to allow until the HDD was full; HR20/21 allows for an hour now; it was only DirecTivo that allowed for 30 minutes. Ugh.
If they can fix that (even an hour would be a huge benefit), allow for cross-receiver watching, and add TivoToGo, I'm in. But then again, I'm in anyway. I want my Tivo!!!

Wow. This is the best news I've heard from DTV in a long time. I've been using DTV's TiVo's since 2002 (including the HD TiVo) but recently switched to the HR21 to get the new HD channels. The HR21 is a serviceable DVR and not as bad as many of the cable DVRs I've played with in terms of interface, but it's no TiVo and still quite buggy (I reboot it about once a week).
Let's see how long it takes for them to actually release it though. "Second part of 2009" in DTV speak usually means late 2010. :P

I think the software on the DirecTV DVR sucks!!. I've had shows stop while being played back and recording a 2 hour event that recorded for 6 hours. Occasionally, after rewinding, I've had the audio track 1 second ahead of the video. I think the reciever also doesn't get all the OTA channels that I should get.
the only thing I've liked is the remote recording from the DirecTV website.

This is apparently a "non-exclusive" agreement between DirecTV and Tivo. Hopefully that opens the door for a similar offering from Tivo for Dish Network (assuming Tivo wins the lawsuit). I'd personally love to have the Dish HD Only package available with Tivo.

Just to be clear, this is technically a lease. So you "buy" the ability to lease the set top box and because it's an HD set top box you sign up for a two year commitment and if or when you cancel your service you will need to return the set top box to DirecTV and will not be able to resell in an effort to recoup your investment.

Yay!!! this is solidly good news. I would have to believe this will help satisfy consumers who want a better experience than the Directv machine offers.
and i would be over the moon ecstatic if the tivo's could share content in the same home, so you can watch whatever is on another machine over an ethernet network or such.

The current HR2x series is (finally) adequte, but it has several annoying issues that make it unusable for many people. Chief among these is the inability to limit search results to channels in your channel lists.
For example, as search for "Prison Break" for an LA subscriber returns 7 results (east coast SD, east coast HD, west coast SD, west coast HD, OTA HD, SD local, HD local), of which I can't even tune 2 and only have one in either of my channel lists.
The HD TiVo would only show the ones that were in the channel lists.
This failure makes all autorecord options worthless and makes it incredibly easy to "record" shows on channels you don't get.
Then there's the porn, foreign language and shopping channels that come up in the search as well....
DirecTV claims that their programmers are at a loss on who to fix this, which makes one wish for a TiVo every damn time.

Oh please please please give us seamless multi-room viewing- like, the menu of recorded shows does not even bother to tell you what tivo they are on. Man oh an that would be nice.
i would get another one for upstairs if that were the case. And pay Directv for a second hookup! Four tuners- two to the living room dvr, 2 to the upstairs dvr. Playlists shared, to do list showing for both tivos without even worrying about what tivo was recording what show.
Oh that would be nice- no more stupid home remodeling and gay people redressing shows from my wife overwriting my Terminator show!

Alright! I blew a whole day and about $140 over this past weekend resuscitating our HR10-250 for the third time, because the wife just can't stand the thought of setting aside the beloved Tivo for an inferior user interface. Oh, I _so_ hope DirecTV can deliver this thing on schedule! I was really, really dreading the day I couldn't bring our current trusty-but-aging box back from the dead, and had to put that clunky D* remote in my wife's hand...

I've never used Tivo before but I'm sure the hype is well worth it. I still get scared away by the price of these damn things though. $500 for a DVR that I can normally get for free or for $100 through the dish company. Why on earth would I want to pay $500?

Trust me, Tivo IS the best! I was going to place the call to DirecTV to cancel service and go with Tivo friendly Time Warner the same day they announced this news. I'm now going to stay with DirecTV and wait till they release this new DirecTivo unit in late 2009. I've had three personal friends in three different households leave Directv because they were tired of their sluggish DVR.
