BDP-S300 firmware 4.20 adds Dolby TrueHD support, finally
Still hanging onto that old Sony BDP-S300 Blu-ray player? Your faith has been rewarded now that the 4.20 firmware update adds Dolby TrueHD audio decoding. Support was rumored in past firmware updates, but as of 8/29, it's official, along with BD-Java fixes and BD-/RE BDMV compatibility. Remember when we thought $600 for a player with limited audio support and no Bonus View or BD-Live compatibility was cheap? Oh, how expectations change.

Didn't the BDP-S300 bitstream TrueHD?
Well at least Sony is keeping more than just the PS3 up to date. If I bought one and they DIDN'T at least look like they were supporting it, I'd be a tad upset.

No, I don't remember when $600 was cheap - and telling by standalone sales, neither does the American public.

I have one of these. I'm going to give it to my dad since I got a PS3. Glad to see it's still up-to-date!
I payed $400 for it new. So $600 does not sound cheap.

FYI - hdguru reported that Sony is dropping the MSRP on the 350 to 299 this month. I just wish there was some news on what kind of bundles and/or promotions we'll be seeing out of Blu this holiday season. I need a 2nd player (hesitant about getting another PS3) but don't want to pull the trigger too early and regret it.

If you're worried about getting the absolute best price, then I definitely recommend you wait at least until the Black Friday sales prices are leaked, probably in mid-November or so.

What I'd like to know is...
Which player has the best quality picture when outputting 1080i and 576p through Component?
The 300 or 350?
As I have a very nice Sony Widescreen CRT that aint going anywhere, that's all I really care about.
Anyone know someone that's got access to both players?

Does the player support TrueHD via Bitstream or PCM?
My understand was that the player didn't support any HD Audio tracks so this firmware allows for TrueHD but via what?
Does it support DTS MA via Bitstream or PCM and didn't catch wind of it?
