That sound you just heard was millions of Browncoats exhaling, because the
Firefly Blu-ray boxed set hinted at
back in April is finally nearing release. All those still reading and not already frantically preordering the $89.98 MSRP set or repaying their oxygen debt have quite a bit to look forward to. Due November 11, Fox is bringing Joss Whedon's series home complete with new-for-Blu-ray commentary and cast reunion featurette to go with the 1080p video (in correct 1.78 aspect ratio) and DTS-HD MA soundtrack. So now that it has a date, what do we do? Probably not talk quite so much.

you know for a show they canceled and showed in the WRONG order. You'd think they'd get the point after all this that maybe they should bring it back, or would that be too much egg on their face?
I mean, who in the name of Zeus' butthole would ever think "America's Next Top Dog" would be a good idea anyway? WTF?!?
HowardLive @ Aug 19th 2008 10:49PM
Well done, Fox. :-)
Now let's see the last three seasons of Angel on Blu-ray!
jjd+engadgethd @ Aug 20th 2008 1:16PM
I'm didn't think that Angel was originally shot in HD, making a blu-ray release kind of pointless.
eugene @ Aug 19th 2008 10:54PM
awesome news!
007craft @ Aug 19th 2008 10:55PM
while were at it, why not a revival of the show itself? or at least a sequel to serenity. I havent watched the serenity hd-dvd yet because I have been waiting to first watch firefly in hd. Now ill finally have my chance
Sean @ Aug 20th 2008 12:53AM
A revival of the show? That would be to smart for Fox to do.
Xyzzy @ Aug 19th 2008 11:56PM
So why is the MSRP of this thing $90 when you can frequently buy the SD version for $15?
I love Firefly more than most, but even if I had a BD player, there's no way in hell I'm paying $90 for the set. Even half that is really pushing it.
FreeRange @ Aug 20th 2008 12:35AM
I don't understand the price discrepancy with BD at all. These are the MSRPs according to Amazon and not what Amazon sells them for. I want to compare what the publisher believes it's worth:
$40 The Sarah Connor Chronicles
$40 Pushing Daisies
$70 Heroes season 2
$80 Smallville Season 7
$90 Firefly
$97 Lost Season 3
$100 Band of Brothers
$129 Sopranos Season 6 part 1
This reminds me of how the X-Files were the only TV show for $100 because they were among the first shows available on DVD so there were no price reference. They picked their price and ran with it.
I guess this is a long way of saying I won't be buying this for $90, or even $60, dollars. Someday it'll be $30 and then I'll bite. Until then, I'll live with my DVD copy that still works just fine.
Michael @ Aug 21st 2008 4:29AM
What I don't get is why people are always so annoyed at the MSRP, when we ALL KNOW that you never pay that, especially on Amazon. I pre-ordered this the day I found out about it for $62.95.
chefgon_ign @ Aug 21st 2008 10:42AM
You are clearly NOT a bigger firefly fan than most if you think the complete series in HD isn't worth $90. That is the bargain of the century, I would gladly pay double that without hesitation.
JimC @ Aug 20th 2008 12:20AM
Bringing the series back is slim to none but I'd love to see another movie...but this blu-ray is a must have!
Garrett @ Aug 20th 2008 12:52AM
Cant wait to watch this again in HD. I agree with FreeRange on the price difference. Ridiculous. They want us to but these things right.
Mr. E @ Aug 20th 2008 1:54AM
Yeah, the starting price is pretty silly. I guess they must be hoping the "Browncoats" will buy initially, no matter what the price, so they're going to shoot for maximum profit up front. I guess I'd have to classify myself a "Beigecoat", because I really liked the show, but I'm not going to pay above $30 shipped for the series, which means it will have to drop to about half of this initial MSRP. I know I'll have to wait awhile for that, but it will happen eventually.
Woody @ Aug 20th 2008 10:30AM
Damn! I just bought it a week ago on DVD for $18 shipped! I guess I can't complain about that though.
Eric @ Aug 20th 2008 10:51AM
The fact that Fox seems to be so clue-impaired in so many ways could possibly be best shown with the Blu-ray releases of Prison Break.
Okay, let's see, there's Season 1. Which sales were a bit slow (since the Blu-ray and HD-DVD wars was still going full steam).
And then I'm in Best Buy the other day and lo and behold, there's season 3 in Blu-ray.
Doh! What the heck happened to season 2?
Fox, are you really that ignorant?
AR @ Aug 20th 2008 12:45PM
Great series. Great movie too. You can definitely appreciate and enjoy Serenity without seeing the series. I only got interested in the series after seeing the movie.
Totally agree with the American's Top Dog comment above...what a laugh. Fox invited 3rd graders into the board room for that decision.
Bearsuit @ Aug 20th 2008 1:05PM
Look up the updated cover art. I like the blu ray cover A LOT MORE....
Skapig @ Aug 20th 2008 2:28PM
The show was aired on Friday which is a red flag that FOX never had any intention of pursuing the series any further. Friday is where the network puts all of its non-rerun programming to die.
I went through the series recently and enjoyed it. Not to the point of being a hardcore fan, but it is one of the better sci-fi shows of late. The big problem with it that I observed is that the series starts off really slow. It picks up about half way through the season quite nicely, but that's too late for a new niche show. The opening credits also probably turned off a lot of people before they even gave Firefly a chance.
If you're feeling really cheap, you can watch the entire series for free on Hulu.
FreeRange @ Aug 20th 2008 5:13PM
Okay, new thought: If they bundled this with the 6 episodes of Drive that aired (1-4, anyway) on Fox in HD, I would bite for $50.
Two cursed Fox programs in HD seems good to me. And both starring Nathan Fillion(sp?)! What a deal!
MasterCKO @ Aug 20th 2008 8:25PM
agreed
CubeGuy @ Aug 20th 2008 10:26PM
Unfortunately, my heart exploding at the news means I won't be able to enjoy said product.
HowardLive @ Aug 26th 2008 7:39PM
Actually, the entire five-year run of Angel was shot on 35mm film; the last three seasons were framed with widescreen in mind; and The WB broadcast the last two seasons in HD. So the film stock is good enough to at least start on a Blu-ray reissue all the way through (unlike the first two years of Buffy, shot on 16mm film with pretty poor FX).
