Ready to watch the 2008 Beijing Olympics?
There's no doubt about it, no matter what the air quality -- or the political climate -- is like, these will be the best Olympics ever to watch from home (maybe 2012, eh Oscar?) With every moment captured in high definition and available right away, viewers will have their choice of sports to watch at all times, on a number of different platforms. Whether you're new to HD -- and are absolutely sure your HDTV is set up properly -- in the last four years or still have nightmares punctuated by "We've got chips...and salsa" (we've formed a support group for the survivors of 2004) we'll do our part to make sure you're equipped to get the most possible out of the 2008 Olympic Games. The HDTV

Still, even if with every channel there's a chance you'll miss the sport or country of your choice, which is where online comes in. NBCOlympics.com plans over 2,000 hours of streaming video from Beijing, with a Microsoft Silverlight plugin, you can follow any sport, whether live or already broadcast at anytime you choose. (Note: this is part of NBC's exclusive deals with different cable and satellite providers, but in our testing this morning it doesn't matter which one you say you have, so this will be available to all.) To find out what's on everyday, we recommend keeping an eye on the official Olympics website or HDSportsguide.com. This morning we were either able to stream one sport in a large window, or pull up the live video control room to keep an eye on three soccer games plus women's gymnastics practice all at once, with nary a bit of buffering to be found.
The HTPC

The HD DVR

Whether or not you're going the media PC route, since this year's Olympics promise to be a marathon of events covered like never before, even the best combination of DVRs, hard drive space and number of tuners can't promise to catch every single second of sport. Your best bet is unfortunately your provider's DVR, clunky menu system and all, the combination of dual tuner access with daily HD video on-demand updates is hard to beat. Want to catch last night's archery highlights? VOD is your best bet so come ready and equipped.
The audio

The international experience
Not in the US (psst. Even if you are, our friends at TV Squad may be able to help you get a different viewpoint on the games.)? As mentioned previously, there's always YouTube, but if grainy stuttering clips aren't your style, there's a fair chance you local broadcaster is geared up for the Olympics as well. We've kept an eye out for Olympics coverage around the world, but feel free to let us know in the comments how you're checking out the Games for any we've missed (not that we care -- we're too busy keeping up with the U.S. gold medal count. Yeah that's right, it's Olympics time and your country is going down. Synchronized swimming? We got it locked. Show jumping? It's in the bag. Brazil, you call that a judo team? We'll show you how it's done. Usain Bolt is hopeless against our 9.68 Tyson Gay in the 100m, so we're not even sure why it's being run at all.)

Nope. I'm skipping the Olympics altogether. I don't think China should've gotten the privilege of hosting them. And today, they still show resistance to the details they'd agreed to.
andrew oh @ Aug 7th 2008 4:28PM
And why do you think China should not have gotten the privilege of hosting? Elaborate. And please dont mention human rights as the sole reason.
Mikey C. @ Aug 7th 2008 4:32PM
The olympics are not about the country that they are in, they are about the unadulterated competition of athletes from around the world. While people can take pride in their own countries competitors, I believe it is best that politics be put aside. Again, it is not my intention to downplay the reasons that you believe China shouldn't have the privilege, I just want to stress that the olympics could be held anywhere and the athletes still have to perform the same task.
D0mth0ma5 @ Aug 7th 2008 4:34PM
Human rights really should be enough...
But how about shocking levels of air pollution, interference in darfur including sales of weapons which contravene international bans, hosting the olympics in a non-democratic society (ancient greece being the birth-place of democracy).
Josh @ Aug 7th 2008 7:28PM
Don't forget about that whole freedom thing (speech or otherwise). The athletes may be performing the same tasks, but when the reporters that share their accomplishments with the world are hampered by the host government from doing so impartially, the spirit of the games is in danger.
Alex @ Aug 7th 2008 10:01PM
Rob, Who cares if you want to watch it or not, you are probably one tiny drop of the water in the sea, nobody cares for you, nobody even knows you, even if you stage a hunger protest of China's olympic, nobody even feel pity for you.
People who mix politic and sport are attention-whores. Pathetic and loser.
Za @ Aug 8th 2008 1:37AM
The 1936 Olympics were given to Nazi Germany. And it's amazing they happened, because an black American athlete, Jesse Owens, won 4 Gold medals. A black man showing up a government hell-bent on eugenics.
You don't think that's powerful?

It is powerful, though the UK, US, Chinese, etc. governments are all hell bent on eugenics now!
dasilvetz @ Aug 7th 2008 3:34PM
Just wanted to chime in by saying that I work at NBCOlympics.com and the amount of planning and work that has been put into this event from our perspective is absolutely tremendous.
luun @ Aug 7th 2008 4:53PM
I have tons of respect for the amount of work required to get that site together and working.
That said, I still can't believe that NBC got conned into using Silverlight, what a cluster! Why on earth you would rely-on and ask millions of users to install a buggy beta product for an event as big as the Olympics is beyond me.
vb @ Aug 7th 2008 6:31PM
Don't know what your problem with Silverlight is. It works fine on IE, it works fine on Firefox, it works fine on the Mac, it works fine everywhere I tried (it might not work on Linux, don't know).
So what if it's beta? Gmail is beta too and thousands of people use it daily.
Rick @ Aug 7th 2008 6:41PM
The work done so far is amazing, great quality and I love the picture in picture, very cool; can't wait for the games.
@lunn, I hope you're not using a gmail account, it's still in beta! SL is working great from what I can see, go hate somewhere else.
justincase @ Aug 9th 2008 2:51PM
Except I can't view the online coverage- my cable company doesn't have an agreement with NBC apparently :(:(
Mr. E @ Aug 7th 2008 4:00PM
Kudos to NBC for their exhaustive coverage schedule, but unfortunately I'm just not that psyched about the games this year. It's probably a combination of factors. (1) China, (2) mega-smog, (3) events happening in the middle of the night our time, so little hope of avoiding spoilers before I can reasonably watch an event.
I'll probably still DVR my favorite events, but I don't expect to really catch more than an hour or so a day, on average.
hello @ Aug 7th 2008 10:42PM
lol the smog there isn't that bad: i have been there.
When i was in LA, i noticed about the same amount of smog. U have to see it from far away to actually SEE it, or u have to try to look for smog. Ur country's media has u confused and brainwashed, man. Stop complaining until you go there and see for yourself.
olympicVictory @ Aug 7th 2008 4:36PM
The last comments in the article were extremely bold. We better perform as well as you said we would. I got bets with my co-workers on Michael Phelps and the US Olympic basketball team! The last thing I want to do is to have to take those monsters out for drinks.. On a side note, is the broadcast over tvtonics.com the same quality as over the air channel 4.1 HD?
nickr @ Aug 7th 2008 4:39PM
I can't believe they didn't mention AT&T U-verse's app that they have for medal counts and such in here... :(
Scott McB @ Aug 7th 2008 4:40PM
lets not forget that AT&T and Verizon are also going to have video of the olympics available on your cell phones - lets see how their 3G networks can handle the load!
radadactyl @ Aug 7th 2008 4:55PM
The only bad thing with tvtonic's olympics on the go is that it does not support vista 64 bit which is kind of ridiculous. If anyone has a solution please post.
Kevin Gann @ Aug 7th 2008 5:36PM
No! Don't remind of Todd and his stupid salsa! I had FINALLY gotten over it recently, and now you've gone and brought back all the bad memories again.
Where is that support group?
Mert @ Aug 7th 2008 6:19PM
Just how much China has invested in this is about $35 Billion, I'm from Canada and how much we are spending for Winter games, $2 Billion... Of course the summer and winter games magnitude can not be compared easily but make it double, make it triple, make it quadruple, still by far. That deserves the respect of everyone. As some of you said, political issues will always be there, please see the real reasons why we have the games and that is only for Athletes... nothing more nothing less... Which country doesn't have its dirty laundry? Biggest one is perhaps USA's nobody complain about them when they get any Olympic Games! Let's be all objective or all subjective, shall we?
vb @ Aug 7th 2008 6:26PM
It actually does make a difference into which provider you choose on NBCOlympics.com
I chose Cablevision (what I really have) and it wouldn't let me watch live events, I then chose DirecTV and it works fine now.
ninjagin @ Aug 7th 2008 6:47PM
I am very much an olympics junkie. I bought my very first recliner for the last summer games. So many weird sports. Bouncing bambis, people that can jump over your house. It's awesome. Granted, I'm stuck with my 32 in 720p samsung LCD, but it'll be fine.
Randall Lind @ Aug 7th 2008 7:51PM
BrightHouse Networks in TampaBay just added 4 channels for the Olympics in HD channels are 634-637. OKOR, OCHN, OBSK and OSOC all NBC channels.
next broadcast women soccer 8/9 is showed on all the channels but no time giving.
Joe @ Aug 7th 2008 7:55PM
Mert, You are quite ignorant if you think china spent 35 Billion for the "Atheetes". Every penny of that is self serving, the entire olympics will merely be a showcase for their new ascension into superpowerdom.
Alex @ Aug 7th 2008 10:05PM
I think you speak for yourself. Look who's talking, you are the one who's ignorant.
Za @ Aug 8th 2008 1:46AM
It's their right. China has more people than Europe and North America put together.
Are you saying your lives are worth more than Chinese lives? I don't really see your point. I think many, many, many countries use the Olympics to show their country's grandeur. I think that's the bloody point.
Twit.
Huy @ Aug 7th 2008 7:56PM
I'm just pissed off that Comcast in Minneapolis won't be carrying the dedicated soccer/basketball channels!
Alex @ Aug 7th 2008 9:57PM
Who cares if Beijing has skeletons in the closet, I don't care. If those people in this comment only knows how to complain how bad China is, then they should go to Africa and Iraq and do something good there instead of Complaining.
Every country has skeleton in their closet, Beijing has them, Washington has them. Those liberals who only knows how to whine better shut up and go smoke some weed.
grrreg @ Aug 8th 2008 9:30AM
Anyone know if the online vids would work on my iphone on wifi? I try hitting the NBC site but it forces me to the mobile version and I don't know how to force it to view the full site
Vinnie Lagorio @ Aug 10th 2008 2:13PM
No they won't, as i hope to god you realize, you can't instal silver light on your iPhone. You can't use flash on your iPhone either... I think NBC is putting their money on the hunch that more hd TVs have been sold in the past decade than iPhones. And the iPhone can't even play HD.
willori @ Aug 8th 2008 11:42AM
China calls themselves a communist country, but after visiting 9 provinces in China and interacting with my wife's mom who currently lives in China, I feel the average chinese citizen is just as free as anyone in america. Their way of living, especially in the metropolitan cities, are just as nice as Americans.
After what China has provided for the world in the past 2 decades, I think they are more than deserving of a olympic host bid.
Randall Lind @ Aug 8th 2008 1:37PM
Why would Brighthouse Newtork add NBC Olympic Korean channel in Florida? They are playing socccer but they speak in Korean so kind of useless to me.
channel 634 in Tampabay OKOR
Matt @ Aug 9th 2008 10:11AM
Australian coverage wall to wall in HD on 7HD (channel 70) and selected events in SD on SBS.
ArgotMay @ Aug 11th 2008 3:53PM
Most Chinese never were allowed to hear about Tankman. All of the rest of us should remember him and tell his story to the Chinese folks.
I know some buddhist monks who went through hell to get into Tibet from China. They aren't allowed to bring a photo of the Dalai Llama as they enter.
I just hope that many important conversations are going on between the commoners in both nations in Beijing right now.
Any foreigners going just to watch Olympics and shop are missing a PROFOUND opportunity.
roseann @ Aug 13th 2008 4:24PM
the free world wants China to give the journalists more freedom to report on the entire game and not 'censored' eg. the chinese version. Hey China
this is your moment in the 'sun' to illuminate us with 'human rights and respect to freedom of expression. To all viewers ENJOY THE GAME.
roseann @ Aug 13th 2008 5:04PM
Although China has not honor the game with full human rights and all
what it takes to give the Olympics its' glory, we should still
promote the game inspite, for the sake of people across the horizon
getting to know each other through sports, culture ect. The Olympics
is still one of the most effective sporting forum to bring all the
