Comcast nabbed the first
US DOCSIS 3.0 deployment award by pushing the technology out to select Minnesota residents in April, but both Charter and Cablevision are making sure to not fall too far behind. During its most recent quarter earnings call, Cablevision COO Tom Rutledge noted that DOCSIS 3.0 would be "operational this year," with around 20% of its footprint going live in 2008 and 100% to be covered by mid-2010. Charter is also poised to introduce the lightning fast broadband capabilities to its loyal customers, with CEO Neil Smit affirming that it would be launched in at least some markets "later in the year." We'd like to think this means we can all look forward to
100Mbit/sec cable internet in the not-too-distant future, but who knows how long it'll take those
other MSO's to join the bandwagon.

i wonder how disproportionate the upload rates will be on a 100mb plan.

I'll believe the speeds when I see them. I have TWC, and lately around peak hours the internet is crawling. Plus I keep reading articles on Engadget that cables network was never really meant for 2 way communication, thus the bandwidth caps.
Although if they can actually offer these speeds, it wouldn't make much sense to have caps, does it?

What the heck is DOCSIS??
The Angry Intern @ Aug 8th 2008 10:07AM
Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) is an international standard developed by CableLabs and contributing companies that include: ARRIS, BigBand Networks, Broadcom, Cisco, Conexant, Correlant, Harmonic, Intel, Motorola, Netgear, Terayon, and Texas Instruments. DOCSIS defines the communications and operation support interface requirements for a data over cable system. It permits the addition of high-speed data transfer to an existing Cable TV (CATV) system.
Great, so soon we'll be able to get to those bandwidth caps just that much faster!

The part about the % of footprint going live was for Comcast, not Cablevision. Re read the linked story. Cablevision has not committed to marketing DOCSIS 3.0 yet. Rutledge said that even if they don't offer the higher speeds it still makes your network better.
