Engadget HD Podcast 096 - 08.06.2008
We're closing in on the century mark, and we'd like to hear from you about what format that magical episode should take, so let us know in the comments. DISH continues to roll right along and doesn't look to be letting off the gas with 150 HD channels and 1080p VOD in the works. DirecTV isn't backing down from the challenge, however, and has been using some its ample DirecTV 11 bandwidth to simulcast MPEG2 HD channels. We talk a bit about Netflix's Blu-ray premium, and the small upcharge of one or two dollars seems like a pretty good deal to us -- doubly so in these times when consumers are having a hard time pulling the trigger on Blu-ray media purchases. The NFL pre-season is kicking off in HD, and even certain season ticket holders can get excited about that. We take a rare moment to side with Verizon on its tru2way stance -- see, we're not always hating on the big red! We wrap up with a couple of bits on the PC front -- the ZvBox and some new 720p Hulu content sure could make bringing the PC into the living room easier and more enjoyable. Again, don't forget to tell us what format you want to hear in episode 100!Get the podcast

I don’t want to inundate the site with political comments, as they belong here as much as they do in the podcast, but to specifically address your comment, in my opinion Mr. O’Reilly is at best a pundit and at worst, a yellow journalist. Examples can be found from several reputable non-partisan sources, were anyone curious enough to look.
I can also confirm that I have watched Mr. O’Reilly’s program from the ironically named “No Spin Zone” in it’s entirety on several occasions. While he can be entertaining, he’s hardly centrist in his criticisms. This is often evident when he threatens to cut a guests mic on the show.
So…. How about those Buccaneers?

In reference to the Blu-ray versus DVD adoption rate discussion one big advantage Blu-ray has going for it that we often forget about is it's backwards compatibility with DVD. I also think if studios came out with some Blu-ray short term exclusives it would boost the number of players sold. I remember I bought my first DVD player because Gladiator was only available on DVD at first. Can you imagine if the Dark Knight was initially released only on Blu? Of course it would help if the player and media prices dropped as well.

Not to turn this into a Bill O’Reilly discussion but there is a reason why he is disliked by the left. Everyday on his show it's the left this the left that, liberal this liberal that while claming to be an independent. He never goes after the right, he'll say something like "both sides do it" but a liberal is always the focus of the attack.
And plus he has a massaive ego, he's not as important as he thinks he is.
Ben @ Aug 7th 2008 8:11AM
Big,
This is exactly what I'm talking about. He goes after the right all the time. Just yesterday on his radio show he was talking about all the hate mail he got because he thinks the Oil companies are using their position in the market unfairly to gouge consumers. He believes they should give 2% of their profits to the people in the NE who can't afford to pay for their heating bills this winder. How right does that sound?
I'm just saying he gives both sides a hard time, maybe not equally, but he does.
Corey @ Aug 7th 2008 8:33PM
I know about the oil thing but I wouldn't say that makes him tough on both sides. Everytimes he goes after politicans, political groups, writers, commentators etc.. It's always a democrat/liberal
Spiza @ Aug 8th 2008 4:58PM
I heard a radio commercial for DISH saying they had 1080p, "The same quality as blu-ray". Future lawsuit?
Julio @ Aug 9th 2008 4:05PM
I'd like you guys to have everyone on at the same time and go at it Mclaughlin style, with Ben being mclaughlin of course...
:)

sparkinator @ Aug 12th 2008 4:24PM
I vote for the option to have each guest on separately.
