Hulu refreshes HD Gallery with 720p TV shows
Pull up that task chair and fire up that web browser, HD-mavens. Hulu has finally stepped up its HD game with the latest update to its HD Gallery. If your rig has a 2.5 Mbps connection to the outside world and a few CPU cycles to spare, Hulu is looking to hook you up with full-length, 720p episodes of Heroes, 30 Rock, 24 and The Office. If you need more incentive to check it out, how about the fact that these videos are ad-free for the time being? If TV isn't your thing, there are a few scraps (read: excerpts) in the "Nature and Documentary" section, and the "Sports" genre houses Game 1 of the 2008 NBA Finals. Yes, the selection is thin and the "Movie Clips" heading is crushing. But since we're feeling "glass half full," we'll be encouraged that Hulu is getting serious about HD internet video. And really, you can't beat the price.

just imagine what it will be like ina year. i'm still waiting on them to add more wwe programming, like raw and smackdown they already have wwecw (i refuse to call it ecw, since its not really, unless you are a wrestling fan you will never understand that :) )

pretty good quality for such a low bitrate..... although its not as apparent on the tv shows as it is on the sports. sports really need something in the 4.0 mbit range atleast.
i do hope this pushes other to upgrade to hd.... eagerly awaiting netflix to see what they do in terms of their bitrates.
gamedude420 @ Aug 5th 2008 3:03PM
I hope hulu upgrades everything to hd or atleast 480p they have some 360p stuff grrrr.
but i also wish even for the sd suff they can go for a higher bitrate.
roku will prob ad hulu in november. if so i'm saying bye bye cable . Upgrading internet , dropping cable tv. im getting netflix soon anyways

Actually a ton of their stuff is 480p. I know I watched the first season of angel all in 480p. Nearly everything I have seen on their recently has had 480p available. Hopefully 720p will become as ubiquitous.
gamedude420 @ Aug 5th 2008 3:38PM
actually they have alot thats not available in 480P though. most stuff is atleast 480p though. im just saying everything else should be upgraded.

i would say, " i hope the 360 picks this up" but then they wouldnt have an audience to sell their TV shows to.... so :-(.... guess i'll still be hooking the lappy up to the TV for a wee bit longer...
But this is good news... cant wait for the new season of Its Always Sunny!

This is one reason why I stopped paying for TV back in Jan.

Even though the content may be available at 480p, 720p, or even 1080p. the framerate and compression that is used can really hurt the viewing experience. Providing 720p and then 1080p with the same compression and framerate you get on a bluray would make Hulu an even more compelling story. I think many people would be willing to queue up a show, and then come back at a later point to view it. We would wait for higher quality. And I am sure that they can figure out a way to force playing of the commercials so people can't skip past them.

So when your at their site, you can put it in Full Screen, but its not the 720p version. It scales the smaller version. When you click the 720p popup, it opens in a new window at a full 1280x720 but then you can do it full screen. Lame.
Team Louish @ Aug 6th 2008 2:18AM
Ah... There is no button for it, but you can simply put the popup in full screen mode (F11) and the video will stretch...

Hulu really needs some way to allow a user to buffer an entire movie before viewing. Things like this are great, but even the 480p service stutters using my 1.5Mbps connection. Similar problems with Netflix are why I'm unlikely to buy the Roku box any time soon.
reallynotnick @ Aug 12th 2008 12:16AM
My 2.0ghz G5 iMac can't even handle 480p with this flash garbage encoding, why can't they just use H.264 as I can play 720p almost perfect when 480p hulu is unwatchable and yet the quality is worse then H.264.
I would love Hulu to be 720p and in H.264 with a set-top box then I could get rid of my cable.
