Details flow about The Ultimate Matrix Collection on Blu-ray
We know you're hungry for every last morsel of information on Warner's hotly-anticipated Ultimate Matrix Collection on Blu-ray, so here goes. Warner Home Video just released information confirming that the data we already had was true, and that a seven-disc BD box set would be landing on (and shortly departing from) store shelves on October 14th. Aside from housing the complete trilogy with lossless 5.1 Dolby TrueHD audio, the package will also include an hour of special features on each film. More specifically, you'll see the studio's In-Movie Experience alongside The Animatrix (which is debuting in high-definition here), 35 more hours of undisclosed bonus material and a digital copy of The Matrix. Yeah, $129.95 is still the asking price, but you know it'll be going for a bit less on launch day.

The biggest detail I'm paying attention to is the price. This thing is ridiculous considering that WB is not giving us a choice to buy the movie we want. Instead, they're forcing us to buy two more movies most viewers don't care for. This is a major skip for me until they release the first one by itself.

Well, $90 for just one movie I'm really interested in is way too much for me. Warner, I'd give you $20 for first Matrix movie. That's all you'd get from me.

Not worth it if you ask me. The Matrix rock the other two movies ruin it.

4 of the discs are BD (the movies and Animatrix), the other 3 are DVDs, one of which is the digital copy.
Not sure why anyone would want to buy all three movies, and I expect WB know this too. That probably explains why they've bundled everything up together so you have no choice. I expect it won't be hard to find for considerably less than the MSRP if you really want it though.

At warnerbrothers.com, you can pre-order it for about 47.5% off the $130 "asking price."
New Warner Code for August:
Coupon Code -- AUBM8
25% off
Ultimate Matrix $90.95 (price drop of approximately $9 -- this also happens to be Amazon's price)
with 25% off
$68.21 (after coupon price drop of approximately $2)
Can purchase Ultimate Matrix ONLY for $68.21 (you do not have to add 2nd title)
Free Shipping on orders over $50, and the Ultimate Matrix is obviously over $50 even at this "discounted" price
$17 per movie isn't great (3 Matrix movies plus the Animatrix), but it is a whole better than the $30/34 (at WB/Amazon) Batman Begins Limited Edition Set.

Essentially you are paying:
Matrix - $34
Animatrix - $17
Matrix 2 (Reloaded?) - $10
Matrix 3 (Revolutions?) - $7

That's a pretty decent deal. I wish there were something equivalent for The Coppola Restoration Godfather set (a release that will no doubt be truly worth the asking price). I'll probably still wait for Warner to either lower the MSRP of the Matrix set enough so I can get it for around $40, or just release The Matrix on its own. Reloaded had some fun demo scenes like the "Many Agents" fight scene, but I don't think I could stomach sitting through Revolutions again. Once in the theater was too much.

So what's the breakdown on spec differences between the HD DVD ultimate collection, besides the digital copy and the Animatrix in HD?
David S @ Aug 1st 2008 1:14PM
Having the red version of the Matrix Collection... All I want is the HD version of Animatrix. They really need to release these separately. To be honest, if I didn't have it already, I would probably just want Matrix Reloaded and the Animatrix.

you could save a lot of money by spending a little more a month on Netflix and just hold on to one of the discs!
