Never one to let its rival Samsung get too far ahead, LG is rolling out its
long awaited local-dimming LED-backlit 1080p LCD (formerly known as the
47LG75) now dubbed the 47LG90. Rocking a $3,599 pricetag when hits shelves in September -- we'll assume it missed the
original Q2 2007 projections due to our request for 120Hz motion processing, now included -- a spec sheet from LG Canada indicates a 500cd/m2 brightness rating, 3 HDMI v1.3 inputs, Intelligent Sensor to adjust for lighting conditions, Invisible Speakers, ISFccc calibration ready, USB port and LG's SimpLink control technology. The "unique teardrop design" with blue accents encloses a 5-inch thick package that can't be as slim as its
LGX cousin, but we're thinking the LED-enhanced view from the front will make up for it. On paper, the Samsung
9 Series seems to have the edge on price and features, but we'll have to wait and see if reality matches the specs.

If the picture quality is anything like Scarlett, this TV will be terrible. I'm guessing it'll be a lot better though.

does anybody know how many dimmable regions this TV (or samsung's new model) will have?
Samsung's old model only had 70 individual regions...Brightside's original prototype had 1400 I think.
On a big screen, it doesn't seem like 70 regions would be enough in some circumstances...

found my own answer:
http://www.productwiki.com/samsung-9-series/
The new 9-series uses 276 individually dimmable regions.
The original 8-series is said to have had "less than 100" -- it's actually 70, IIRC.
For comparison, I believe that Brightside's original HDR monitor used around 1400 regions on a 40" screen...

Samsung 81-series 52" have 96 dimmable regions (zones) and each region (zone) has 12 LEDs so that's a total of 1152 LEDs.
47LG90 have 128 dimmable regions and each region has 12 LEDs so thats's a total of 1536 LEDs.
