Not quite a month after DISH Network
unveiled its summer / fall HD locals, DirecTV is continuing to excite by announcing its next 44 markets that will receive
HD locals. According to the company, it will be providing local HD broadcasts in 121 cities by the end of 2008, which will reportedly represent 88-percent of US TV households. Just after
30 some-odd new HD channels go live on August 14th, it will begin rolling out HD locals to cities like Augusta, GA, Baton Rouge, LA, Boise, ID, Chattanooga, TN and El Paso, TX. There are 39 more markets to scan through in the read link -- here's to hoping your locale is listed!

Peoria-Bloomington, IL = SWEET!!!!!
I have been resisting satellite for a long time due to the fact that they didn't offer locals in HD. When this goes into effect, GOODBYE COMCAST FOREVER!!!

I get my locals in HD right now but not the CW or PBS. Will these just light up whenever D* adds them or will there be a press release?
JimC @ Jul 28th 2008 3:15PM
Currently, DirecTV doesn't carry the local CW at all. I have to use an OTA to get it. Unless they add CW to the locals in Toledo area, I'm going to be keeping the OTA just for CW....I'm also wanting to see just how good the HD locals from DT compare to HD locals OTA. Should be interesting...
Kyle @ Jul 28th 2008 4:21PM
Do you mean CW in HD? Cause I get SD CW with D*
JimC @ Jul 28th 2008 4:31PM
No, I don't get any CW at all with DirecTV. It isn't offered in our local DirecTV channels. There are local affiliates though which thankfully I can pull in OTA.

1080p movies?!?!!? When will we get uncompressed clean beautiful HD-tv? When oh when? I want to look at any show in HD and it look as clean as a Blu-ray disk. Is this ever going to be possible?
TrentD @ Sep 17th 2008 7:15PM
Blu-ray is compressed too...just not as much :)

All the HD Local channels or just the main? I'd Like the 2nd and 3rd channels as well.
Our OVA HD signal looked better than what they were offering. (they were close though. after a house hold poll was taken )

Once again, no love for the Left coast. 43 Markets East of the Rockies and 1, count em, 1 on the west side. Boise, ID. I am not saying that the area I live in which is ranked 126 on the DMA market list should have been first in line for HD Locals, but when you are adding Dothan, AL and Butte, MT before markets nearly 3 times their size, it is a bit ridiculous. I wish someone could explain how these decisions are made, although I suspect they are made for the same reason all business decisions are made... and it isn't customer service.

Being a resident of Dothan, AL, I must confess that it is surprising to see Dothan on the list. However, it is pretty funny to see so many people complaining about it. Whatever the reasoning behind the decision, I am quite glad as I've been waiting too long for significant HD penetration around here. To give an idea, I bought my first HDTV (4:3 1080i 32 inch Panasonic CRT) nearly 9 years ago and it's only been a little over a year since Dothan got any HD channels. Thankfully, though, I've had plenty of video games and movies to wet my HD appetite. Yeah, I was the guy who chose "HDTV and the Digital Transition" as my topic for my informational speech back in college. This was around 2000 or 2001 and no one in my class had a clue what I was talking about. By the way, I'm on my 3rd HDTV, a 50 inch Panasonic plasma (TH-50PZ700U). If you're in the market, the TH-50PZ800U looks mighty nice. And in case anyone is still reading, my second HDTV was a 34 inch crt, the model number being my name here as well as my XBOX Live gametag. If anyone is wondering, the XBL gamertags I wanted were already taken. FYI: consumer electronic model numbers are generally available for user names. Peace.

While we are talking about DMAs, what the hell is going on with Lexington, KY??? We are ranked 64th on the DMA market list, but still not a word about bringing HD locals. I've been a D* customer for 5 years now and am feeling extremely left out.
TrentD @ Sep 17th 2008 7:16PM
Right there with you, man! I even applied for a local waiver, but was denied by each broadcaster.
DirecTV - give me HD locals in Lexington!
