Onkyo get my vote, excellent deals and very high quality kit if my experience is anything to go by.
I'm a couple of days into enjoying my 875 - & Jebus H creast does it weigh a ton!
Fantastic sound - and importantly to me with music as well as movies (which is not always the deal with their own lower spec models).
Seeing as how the US always seems to get much better deals than us and the UK is usually such a rip-off I can also see I got a real bargain (and no it's not a refurb).
3 year warranty & in the black finish I wanted too......and (for once, for me) from a B&M store up the road that I can take it to if any problems develop
(although I can see it is a recently manufactured unit on their late firmware, so that should not be an issue.....but early units did have their problems, buyers beware!).
I'm not surprised there receivers are multiple award winners.
It's a real feature-heavy unit; the Reon processor in the 875 is a real gem for instance and the pure clarity and sheer power of the thing makes it money well spent as far as I'm concerned.
No doubt they are going to continue the theme but it'll be a while until I look again - next time I'm sure it'll all be about energy efficiency and lack of bulk, but for now I really can't think of anything I want that this doesn't have.
The 905 has wireless networking but I really couldn't see me making any real use of it.

Have you ever tried an Onkyo DVD player? How does the picture and sound quality of an Onkyo DVD player compare to the Pioneer and Denon DVD players?
I've actually tried a Denon DVD player and I know that Denon's picture has more depth (objects look more 3-Dimensional) than Pioneer's picture. Does Onkyo's picture have the same depth as the Denon picture?

Bummer. I was hoping the US 706 would have 5 HDMI inputs like the (admittedly much more expensive) Japanese version announced a few weeks ago.

I'm glad Onkyo is continuing their refresh.
I'm finishing up my basement home theater and was going to pick up the TX-SR875, but now I'm waiting (as patiently as I can) for the TX-SR876.
Any guesses or thoughts on when I should expect them to announce it?
David S @ Jul 24th 2008 11:47AM
I got the SR705 just last week because it was on sale. Still seems like the receiver is breaking itself in... but I'm enjoying it.
New models mean closeout prices on the old ones. I'm perfectly happy.
Jon @ Jul 24th 2008 11:48AM
i hope they dont plan on using Faroudja DCDi video processing capabilities for all the new units .. i held out on last years models ( it was hard to pass up the 875 and 905 ) .. but if they dont offer the Reon on the top tier models i will be pissed
Taomyn @ Jul 24th 2008 12:50PM
Hang on, so they've gone from Reon in the 875/905 to the inferior Faroudja in the 876/906? Bit of a backward step then?
Glad I have an 875 then.
ne01 @ Jul 24th 2008 4:59PM
@Taomyn
I don't think that's confirmed at this point. Just speculation (hence "i hope" in Jon's post). What is confirmed though is that the Reon implementation in the xx5 generation Onkyo AVRs was flawed. See: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=14109427#post14109427
As a fellow 875 owner I'm still hoping for a firmware fix
Adorada @ Jul 24th 2008 11:59AM
Correction:
The Onkyo HT-S7100 will be available in August at a suggested retail price of $799. The HT-S6100 is now shipping and has a suggested retail price of $699.
from Onkyo's Press release, that was released a couple of days ago.
http://www.onkyousa.com/press_releases.cfm?id=144
And for those wondering, the HT-S6100 and HT-S7100 will both include the 606 receiver, that has both HDMI Video and Audio.
kcmurphy88 @ Jul 24th 2008 12:42PM
I love it that everyone is adding more and more HDMI ports. But what none of these manufacturers (Onkyo, Denon, Sony, etc) tell you is that they may have 5 HMDI, 4 component and 8 other video inputs, but you only get 6 or 7 total sources overall because the internal switch cannot handle all wources at once. RTFM before you buy.
Roland @ Jul 24th 2008 1:19PM
Don't you guys like any other brands? lol
Mr. E @ Jul 24th 2008 3:46PM
Onkyo is clearly the current leader in bang for your buck. I'm a happy new owner of a TX-SR606 myself. It's a stopgap receiver to get me HDMI audio processing, but it's a great unit, especially for only $400 shipped. It really can't be beat.
Truth Teller @ Jul 24th 2008 6:16PM
The thing is, as E so rightly says, in the cost effective stakes there's little to touch Onkyo atm.
They are also multiple (global) award-winners, across most of their range. That's got to give buyers confidence.
Personally I simply refuse to believe that many (if any) can seriously & honestly tell the difference between receivers that meet (and exceed) the THX & THX 2 audio standards - especially if all of the rest of your audio kit is to an equally high standard.
So, having met those audio standards as a minimum, then in those circumstances I think it is perfectly legitimate to look long & hard at the issue of cost v features.
It's clear that right now Onkyo offer more than the competiton at a price they cannot or will not match.
It's just a shame they look like tanks.......and having just moved around my 875 and installed new racking etc I can believe that they are built like them too. 30KGs....60lb!
Monster.
The performance I might add is incredible, a real pleasure.....and that's with both music and movies
(some are good at only 1 task in that equation).
As I mentioned before, I myself cannot really see any serious 'need' for anything more now, the next receiver I buy will be about offering much the same but at much higher levels of energy efficiency and hopefully smaller & lighter too.
I can only really imagine improving some of my speakers in future.
.....oh yeah, and Roland, re -
http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/07/18/onkyo-reveals-integra-dhc-9-9-av-receiver/#readercomments
the Onkyo remote is a very nice piece of kit.
Not too bloated or big, it has a vast number of functions, it's fully illuminated & it is a learning unit too.....what's not to like?
Truth Teller @ Jul 25th 2008 11:47AM
Roland, I left you with the wrong impression here about the 805 -
http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/07/18/onkyo-reveals-integra-dhc-9-9-av-receiver/
I can't see any of the criticism levelled at the 605, 606 & 705.....and it's not that they are bad performers with music, it's just that they are pretty ordinary & nothing to get very excited about in that regard
(but, as is well known now, for movies they are very impressive).
The bit where I'd say the 805 falls short of the 875 is in video reproduction (accepting the 875's very small Reon flaw which I expect a firmware update to take care of).
But that is obvious from the specs
(it's fairly widely accepted that Faroudja scalers are good but not as good as the Reon)
The 805 is a THX & THX2 certified unit too.
With these new units coming an 805 just might be the fantastic bargain someone is looking for.
Truth Teller @ Jul 24th 2008 6:25PM
It's true the Onkyos seem to run hotter than I think most of us are used to but it's perfectly safe (my temps today were early - mid 40'C).
You just need to be very careful about where you are putting them - especially in respect of closed cabinets. Obviously giving them the necessary airflow is paramount.
As the man said 'RTFM', which is so easy now they are almost always available on-line to download and look over before you buy
(top advice that btw).
Onkyo are very conservative in the spec they advice (they talk about an 8" gap above the unit) but that's where the various owners forums are so handy, in the real world they aren't so demanding.
The early models had a firmware recall (some reckon this was a cover for swapping out the early run units with a few dodgy components) but whatever they sorted it properly and stepped up with some great CS.
I did a lot of research before deciding on the 875, now that the early troubles are behind it and the latest firmwares have been implemented (no more DTS 'bomb' effect) it's a great unit.
If you can get one at the right price I would say don't hesitate, you'll be missing out.

I used to own a Denon 2803 receiver. Then I bought a HK 247 and loved the sound. Then I bought an Onkyo 804 and was not impressed - finally I bought the HK AVR 745 refurbished. It embarrased the Onkyo in music and held its own in movies. I personally think that many people underestimate or not consider Harman Kardon receivers. They may have some more bugs compared to other brands, but the audio quality is sweet. My 745 is working great!
Roland @ Jul 27th 2008 12:57AM
Thanks for making my decision even harder by adding HK to the list. What kind of music do you listen to with your HK to judge it's sound quality?
zargon @ Jul 25th 2008 8:06AM
My next move is separates and have been eyeing the Onkyo Integra, but there have been a lot of reports of issues. I have also been hearing about issues on their recievers. I also had a issue with a Onkyo Intergra I bought 6+ years ago, I know it is a long time ago and I do like Onkyo, but they sure seem to have issues.
I returned my Onkyo Integra for a marantz and couldn't be happier (it sounded much better on my speakers anyways). Due to my love of marantz because of the Onkyo issue, I am also looking at marantz new separate line up, but it is a $1,000 more, so it my decision is not going to be a easy one when I make the move.
Roland @ Jul 27th 2008 12:50AM
You seem to be pretty serious about home theater sound. Maybe you should try a Denon from a store that accepts returns. Let me know what you think about the Denons.
I crossed Marantz off my list because I read that they tend to have a big warm sound. I am looking for a neutral sound which I read that the Onkyo/Integras and Denons have. What kind of music do you listen to with your Marantz?

Does anyone know if a dock for the iphone 3g to connect to the onkyo 875 has been produced, and if so, who's selling it.
Thanks
