AT&T's U-verse finally rolls into South Florida
It took awhile, but the rumor finally proved true. AT&T's U-verse has at long last made it to South Florida. Just days after Verizon announced that its competing FiOS TV service was available to some 800,000 members of the Sunshine State, in soars AT&T to bring its fiber-based programming service to Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. Currently, consumers in parts of dozens of communities in Miami-Dade and Broward counties can place their order, while folks in Palm Beach county will be forced to wait until July 28th. No word on how soon it'll reach your neck of the woods down there, but the carrier has vowed to "make U-verse services available to more homes throughout South Florida on an ongoing basis."

With the crappy HD quality provided by AT&T, why does U-verse news continue to come up in Engadget "HD"? Seriously, their HD service is horrible.

I won't. U-verse uses 8Mb/s transcoded data. Comcast is using 15Mb/s straight feeds. The 3/1 compression definitely looks horrible when cable companies do it, but they don't do that on the local HD channels, ESPN HD, TNT HD, or a slew of others. U-verse is unwatchable on ALL HD channels.

Indiana Review of AT&T U-verse
Although there are no contracts for AT&T U-verse, the installation can be lengthy and ineffective, resulting in a lot of wasted time (and our internet didn't work properly for 2 weeks). Reliable internet service is just as important as television service for us.
Seems like AT&T is beta testing but not informing customers they are volunteering for trial and error service.
(AT&T U-verse: A Consumer Report Indiana http://att-consumer-report.com For potential AT&T U-verse consumers, you might want to check this site for further tips to consider before allowing AT&T U-verse to take up your valuable time. If you have a simple set up, with just a few TVs and don't need a wireless internet for your computers, it may still be worth trying.)
AT&T started the installation process for our Carmel, Indiana (Indianapolis) home 8/6/2008 and they abandoned us on 8/20/2008. It was quite frustrating to have them give up when we were ready to wait it out while they finished. After fixing many other problems, they finally said they couldn't fix the internet.
We had many problems with the AT&T U-verse Gateway and the wireless home network provided by AT&T. The internet speeds were so inconsistent that even reading e-mail became a burden (speeds varied up and down randomly from 350 kbps to 5.7 kbps and back down within very short time periods)
Playing games on the internet was impossible.
AT&T told us they couldn't deliver reliable, consistent internet speeds via their wireless network. I thought they could have fixed the problem, but I guess not.
-Long, ineffective installation process
-Slow, slow internet speeds (when using wireless network)
-Internet lags and disconnects
-When the going gets tough, AT&T quits and walks away
It was not worth the trouble and the internet just didn't work. In the end, AT&T gave up.
