Wow, we didn't see this coming, at least not this fast -- just a week after getting
a sneak peek at release candidate zero, our friend Brent Evans pointed us to a Microsoft knowledge base article that clearly states "The Windows Media Center TV Pack was released on July 16, 2008." Our sources are now confirming this and unfortunately the earlier leak that this would be an OEM only update seems to be true as the very next line in the KB says "Not all computers that are shipped by hardware vendors in the retail channel have the Windows Media Center TV Pack installed." What we really want to know though, is if we were able to did get our hands on the Windows Media Center TV Pack, could we just upgrade or would we have to re-install Windows? So while we can't wait to check out the new HD features,
native QAM support, and heterogeneous tuner support, we can't say we're not disappointed.

This is kinda disheartening. I hope this doesn't stay OEM only. Time to drop MCE if it is. Ugh this is like MCE 2005 all over again.
All I really want is the directv support anyways

well that does it for me. I have vista premium and an xbox extender. i run a variety of VMC plugins (the best is msdvrtoolbox to skip commercials automatically) as well as hdhomerun, qam tuner hybrid hauppauge card. But I'm done with microsoft. i've been awaiting this for a year and a half, searching frequently for fiji updates and so forth. An OEM only update. You just lost a VERY loyal customer. So now what? what's the best bet for me? MythTV, BeyondTV, sage, etc? any suggestions? i'm very tech savy with terabytes of space and willing to build my own box. Do I go linux? is there good media center support there?

I was reading through thegreenbutton and saw a response from microsoft:

Wow. This was an eye-opening thread... and not in a good way. There is obviously a lot of frustration about this, but I don't agree with making personal attacks and (in my opinion) very hateful and harsh statements without any real information to back it up. I was also a little surprised at being personally called out for not posting a response (along with Microsoft in general) to a post that wasn't even one day old. Thanks guys, really... I feel the love.
That said, I'll refer back to my earlier post on this topic, and say that we will post more information before the official announcements at CEDIA. You can expect this to include explanations to several of the issues brought up in this thread. In the meantime, I'll see how much (if any) information I can comment on, and we'll share more details when possible. However, I encourage future posts to be somewhat respectful, as I will not be responding to any questions within the flaming or overly anti-Microsoft posts. We all care about the success of Media Center otherwise we wouldn't be here... so please keep that in mind when posting.

Velcrocore @ Jul 18th 2008 12:02AM
No Sh!t? I ordered a m9300t from HP a week ago, and it was built on the 16th. I'd bet there's almost no chance that my computer actually got the update :( I'll post back in a week, once I know for sure. Day early and a dollar short?
topspinserve @ Jul 18th 2008 3:00AM
Are they serious? Now I know I should've just stuck with XP. If Microsoft isn't even going to upgrade the Media Center software, which is the main reason I purchased a copy of Vista, what's the use of it. I was really looking forward to actually being able to use ClearQAM and the other new features.
Jim Mallory @ Jul 18th 2008 7:19AM
I think a lot of frustration comes from Microsoft treating probably one of the best products it has produced in a long time as the proverbial red headed step child. I know I have sold a handful of copies of Media Center to people who otherwise don't want Vista (I use a Mac myself).
What I have heard is that installing the "TV pack" requires a re installation of the Operating System. The fact that the recorded TV is now being recorded as a .wtv (Windows Television) file versus .dvr-ms seems to confirm that.
So what I am expecting is that I will need to go back to my OEM (Velocity Micro in my case) and get updated media with Vista + SP1 + TV Pack. I wouldn't be suprised if there is a handling charge for shipping me the new installation DVD.
I would imagine, that people who bought Retail copies of Vista will also have the upgrade available, and they may need to wait until they set everything up before announcing things.
If anyone gets screwed on this, it will be the people who bought the OEM copies of Vista from Newegg. Microsoft isn't going to want to handle it, because its an OEM copy (and your OEM is supposed to support you) but you are your own OEM.
I just think everyone needs to wait to CEDIA before passing any judgements.
Jon @ Jul 18th 2008 9:06AM
Sept 3-8 is a LONG time to wait for this answer ..Wow
Paul @ Jul 18th 2008 9:20AM
This looks to me like well be seeing two releases but why would you release one now for OEM's and one at CEDIA? surely you'd do it at the same time to prevent the user anger like we are seeing now are MS just pushing Fiji out early to OEMS so that can role out some new PC's.
If this will only be an OEM thing haven't MS just created two versions of MCE either way they've P**sed of a lot of people.
Ben @ Jul 18th 2008 9:21AM
Paul,
CEDIA is a custom installers show, of which most of high end OEMs cater to. What makes you think MS would announce a consumer release at a show like that?
Paul @ Jul 18th 2008 10:28AM
It's just the way Ben Tucker said
"I'll refer back to my earlier post on this topic, and say that we will post more information before the official announcements at CEDIA"
Why say it if you haven't got something to say.
Ben @ Jul 18th 2008 10:31AM
There will be an update at CEDIA, but not a consumer update.
I predict the announcement will be for the Nievius and Vidaboxes of the world so they can brag about all the new features you get if someone buys their systems.
Brad @ Jul 21st 2008 10:06AM
Internet TV was announced at last year's CEDIA. So, it's not ALL custom-installer-specific...

It's a new OS (6.1.xxx, not 6.0.xxx) for "new" PC's.
Some questions I had on TGB that some here may want answers to:
S1Digital: S1Digital will soon be including Windows Media Center TV Pack on NEW systems (only).
Q. Can older systems be upgraded? perhaps with a new OS disk?
S1Digital: Native unencrypted QAM support (you no longer need DCTs to get basic cable in Media Center)
Q. You don't need a DCT to get basic cable right now. It's the tier channels and the HD people wan't.
S1Digital: Native support for up to four DCTs (Vista Ultimate versions only)
Q: Just DCT's, what about other types of tuners? (just cuious... two tuners would be plenty for me.)
S1Digital: Ability to watch non copy protected recorded TV on other PCs
Q. I can watch non-copy protected recordings on other PC's now. How is this differant?
S1Digital: (that have to have the TV feature pack installed though)
Q. Ahhh!!! So all PC's may need to be replaced. (Maybe a .wtv thing?)
This is not encouraging,
William @ Sep 27th 2008 10:51AM
I want to record three shows. one runs Monday through Friday at 8, one runs Monday through Friday at 9, and another runs Monday through Thursday at 11. There are other shows I want to record as well, and these three shows repeat throughout the day on their respective stations, but these three should always record at these times unless they have been preempted.
I never want to record the same show twice in one day. If they have two different new shows in one day, well that would be ok, but not if it is the same show.
Why is this so hard to do? This is what I want. No Saturday repeats, no 2 copies of the same show in one day, no 3:00 am recording of the show at 11:00 pm.
Is there a way to write some code to extend the Vista Media Center software to do things right?
