I don't see why manufacturers shouldn't make DVD and Blu Ray players at the same time, assuming they can make a profit.
What most people are laughing at Toshiba for is pretending that a glorified upscaler in a DVD magically makes it comparable to true HD quality. Toshiba also have the thorny issue of cost. Samples of SpursEngine chips are $100 a pop. This is bound to fall dramatically as yields increase and they go 65nm or smaller, but it raises a huge question mark over the wisdom of shoving them in a DVD player when the margins are so tight.
