AOC unloads 42-inch L42H861 LCD HDTV for $1,000

AOC Launches their New 42" Full 1080p LCD HDTV
Higher resolution, 3 HDMI inputs, and easier installation all come standard with the new L42H861
Fremont, CA., July 10, 2008 – AOC announced today the launch of their L42H861, a new 42" full 1080p LCD HDTV. This latest offering from AOC takes into account that powerful performance, vivid picture quality, and a high-tech list of specifications is only part of the equation to having a great HDTV. AOC's newly designed 42-inch 1080p LCD is the marriage of beautiful design and the latest in video display technology.
AOC's L42H861 is designed with the technological and aesthetic needs of today's consumers in mind. In addition to having the latest in HD display technology and horizontal inputs for easier installation, the L42H861, unlike most HD TVs, is designed to provide stunning performance for HD, or non-HD channels. Whether using a Blu-Ray®, HD DVD Player, or gaming consoles, consumers can enjoy the best in high definition performance.
"Our new 42-inch 1080p TV is the strongest performer to date from AOC, and features a design that fits with its level of performance," said Robert Velez, Marketing Manager for AOC. "We have also taken into account that consumers are noticing their HD TVs look great on HD channels, but worse then their old TVs on non-HD channels, so we design our TVs with this in mind and the L42H861 provides top level performance on all channels," said Velez.

Now we don't even bother to list the real/static contrast ratio?
Sure, dynamic contrast has its uses...but any intelligent consumer (ie: Engadget readers) will also want to know the actual contrast-ratio capabilities of the panels.

Not to mention the real world viewing angles. 176 degrees, give me a break.

Costco.com is selling this tv for $849 and they say on their site that the contrast ratio is 1500:1. Also found a some postings on avsforum.com where a few folks have purchased the TV and seem to like it.

Btw, I'm considering purchasing the Panasonic Viera TH-42PX80U 42-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV which is at $999 on Amazon.com (which has a 5 star rating) or 42" LCD TV similar to this AOC, but my price range is about $1000. Picture clarity and color are my highest priorities (as are probably most people). Would you all think I should get the Panasonic Plasma over this AOC LCD (The L42H861) with only spending $1k? I have read so much out there on both technologies (Plasma vs LCD), but would like some opinions.

pretty sweet, but I think I'd rather get a 720P panel of the same size and higher contrast ratio/general specs for the same price. I do have a bluray player (ps3), which makes me want the 1080P though.
But I've watched planet earth on blu on my buddies 65" DLP (only does 720p) and the picture is still worlds better than my 1080p 32" lcd..
Until we start getting reliable OTA/cable/dish 1080P signals, I really can't justify buying a 1080p panel unless it's kick ass, like a Kuro or something.

For 1000 euros (more or less a grand in greenbacks) I bought a 50" LG plasma whose specs (not to mention 3 HDMi ,VGA, DVT-B etc) would make aoc die of shame.
But then I do not live in the land of the free

UMMM..........
1 EURO = 1.57 DOLLARS
1000 DOES NOT EQUAL 1570, hence the difference in your specs.
Plus this TV is 800 at costco

I bought this AOC set from Costco and have no complaints. The color is brilliant and the picture 1080 clear. It does take about 8 seconds for the picture and sound to come up after power-up though. Nintendo Wii games looks great on it also!
