87% of PlayStation 3 owners watching Blu-ray movies? Survey says yes
Buried under predictions that 2012 will bring dominance for Blu-ray over DVD and breaking news that the PS3 just may have had a hand in winning the format war the Entertainment Merchant's Association 2008 Annual Report on the Home Entertainment Industry holds survey results showing 87% of PS3 owners reported they watch Blu-ray movies on their console. That's a stark contrast to last year's NPD survey indicating 60% of owners didn't even know it played them. We don't know what's behind the jump, be it better marketing/consumer education, or something wrong with how one the surveys were conducted. You can mull that one over during the fast money round while also peeping results that say 22% of HDTV owners think they're watching HD programming, but in fact are not -- not like we haven't heard that before.

Congrats. A Sony survey sure beats a rootkit!
Fred @ Jul 4th 2008 10:24PM
uhhhhhhh, way overblown numbers. If anyone here can do math that means out of the 5.21 million PS3's sold in America, about 4.5 and more are watching blu-ray.
Or what they think is Blu-Ray.
Or maybe this could be true, and therfore being PS3's worst nightmare... that people bought the system as a Blu-Ray player, but they don't buy any blu-rays (Rent) or buy any games to help sony recoup their 3.3 Billion Lost in the PS3.
This survey would have some legs if they asked how many Blu-Ray movies you own and how often do you watch a Blu-Ray movie.
EQC @ Jul 5th 2008 2:12AM
Heh..."Or what they think is Blu-Ray."
Never underestimate the stupidity of typical consumers. I wouldn't be surprised if a large chunk of that 87% thought "Blu-Ray" was what happened when you put a DVD in a PS3.
Pete @ Jul 5th 2008 1:04PM
What a tiresome threesome of supercilious wankers you are
Truth Teller @ Jul 6th 2008 11:29AM
Given that a scary number of people are currently telling pollsters (in the USA & UK) that they think the imminent switch to digital TV is the same thing as high def I'd say that neither EQC nor nfinity are being in the least bit "supercilious".
It's a perfectly reasonable & fair reflection of reality.
Especially given the fact that Sony (at least initially) boxed PS3s with a composite cable (incapable of supplying a high def signal).
Supercilious?
Maybe you ought to go look the word up and try for an appropriate use of it next time, eh?
Is it the new addition to the blu-ray.com lexicon?
Hmmm, it's only taken about 9mths since they all started referring to everything they didn't like as "asinine"; things are speeding up over there.
As for "w@nkers"?
I thought outright name-calling by abusive foul language was banned here?
Seeing as your only contribution to this thread has been to apply a wrong criticism and attack someone with an abusive term (for Americans who may not know a "w@nker" comes from the term 'w@nk' which means masturbate, so calling someone a w@nker is no term of mild endearment.
Pathetic.

Jeez, that's your comeback?!
You must be so proud.
You got totally sussed out on the inaccurate use of a vocabulary clearly alien to you and utterly shot down for your use of a crassly offensive & abusive term to other posters.
That's pretty funny, in a tragic kind of way......tho I doubt anyone will be laughing 'with you' for it.
Pete @ Jul 7th 2008 2:24AM
Don't even attempt to take any high moral ground here, you hypocrite.
mntwister @ Jul 4th 2008 11:12PM
And why wouldn't PS3 owners watch blu-rays? If they have the capability, of course they are going to use it and watch high def movies. Nothing surprising about the 87% to me. Of course, as "some" people claim, PS3 owners are all a bunch of teen gamers who don't watch movies, as I am sure we will hear right below this post very soon (rolls eyes).
David S @ Jul 4th 2008 11:45PM
I doubt 87% of PS3's are hooked up to HDTVs... so why are they watching blu-ray?
DeadPlasmaCell @ Jul 5th 2008 1:08AM
I fall into the "My PS3 is a Blu-Ray player that happens to play games" category. I don't buy movies, I rent from Netflix and I don't buy PS3 games, I rent them. And I've only rented about 4 PS3 games, MGS4 being the most recent.. and that's a fine line between "game" and "movie" so that might fall in the movie category x)
Big Sam @ Jul 5th 2008 12:06PM
I fall into that category as well. I own a few Blu-ray titles, and I rent from Netflix (only Blu-ray, no DVD). I have only played 2 games on my PS3 (not counting demos), Resistance (borrowed) and GOW2 (PS2). And that was last year. The little gaming I have time to do I do on my 360 (when its working).
crawdad62 @ Jul 5th 2008 1:51AM
I fall into the category of "I bought a PS3 for Blu-ray and ended up playing games." While I still watch my fair share of BD movies I really enjoy all the games and content available on the PS3.
I just ordered a Roku Netfilx player. Had the PS3 been capable of playing the Netflix "watch now" movies I'd consider it a perfect mulit-media machine.
Marrvia @ Jul 5th 2008 3:34AM
I've watched a grand total of 2 blu-ray movies on PS3. Taladaga Night, which came with the system, and I rented The Goodfellas one time.
J.Goodwin @ Jul 5th 2008 9:58AM
Cue joke about Metal Gear Solid 4 being a BluRay movie here.
I use it predominantly for (real) BluRay movies as well.
Big Sam @ Jul 5th 2008 12:07PM
Is Paul seriously going to keep posting an Amazon affiliate link on every post?
Dennis @ Jul 5th 2008 2:30PM
I think of my PS3 as a Blu-Ray player that plays games. I don't even use my Samsung Blu-Ray player any more, its just too fussy and slow. I think of my Xbox 360 as a game machine that plays my 30+ HDDVDs. I even bought an extra player for it in case my other one breaks. It ended up being free since I paid $50 for it then Amazon gave me a $50 credit.
zoran @ Jul 5th 2008 2:55PM
O.K. everyone. The real question is, How many people that own a PS3 have an HDTV to play the PS3 on. I bet you that of those 87%, not all have an HDTV, so they are probably watching Blu-Ray movies in SD. So why in the world did they buy a PS3 in the first place, let alone watching Blu-Ray movies in SD. Also, I hear this a lot. Some people say, I can't see the difference between DVD and Blu-Ray. Then I ask myself. But you can see the difference betwen 1080i and 1080p. You paid extra money for something you can't see. This point was brought up in the last Podcast. People pay premiuim for the things they can not see (1080p), but will will not invest money into PS3 or Blu-Ray player, which even a blind man can see the difference between. Maybe they don't like to see a $400.00 price tag. Then all of a sudden, what they have is good enough. Not for long. When they see Blu-Ray movie on a 120Hz Samsung or Sony, they will stop look and listen because you have never, ever seen a picture like that before.

Yeah right, like no-one has ever been to a cinema before........ or even just opened their eyes and seen images of the real world to a resolution way beyond current high def.
(Not forgetting high def TV, downloaded high def or HD DVD)
LMAO
Don't be so silly.
Most people are not consumed to the nth degree as a home cinema enthusiast would claim to be.
They don't care about - and certainly have little interest in paying out the large sums necessary for - 120Hz, 60"+ HD TVs or the relatively expensive audio kit needed to experience the new audio standards.
For a huge number of people TV is just TV, not an obsession.
Wake up.
Spiza @ Jul 6th 2008 9:40AM
And you obviously bought an LCD, so how can you judge others so harshly?
Truth Teller @ Jul 6th 2008 11:17AM
@ Spiza
You've got this all wrong.
I like high def.
I really do.
I also enjoy the new high def audio.
I just find the idea (which some clearly want to delude themselves abot here) that that minority enthusiasm will ever carry across in a big way to the majority (the true a/v mass-market) is utterly laughable.
It is equally ludicrous when we get served up absurd statements like
"When they see Blu-Ray movie on a 120Hz Samsung or Sony, they will stop look and listen because you have never, ever seen a picture like that before."
Particularly when the highest def we can experience of all (and have all - disease and accidents aside - been experiencing since birth) is plain old human eyesight.
I'm not being harsh, I'm just questioning some of the more ridiculous statements from some of our posters as they get (so obviously) carruied away on the hype.
......and btw you have no idea what kit I have or do not have - but the comment about the Samsung was a bit of a give-away I guess ;)
Sure it has it's flaws (still) but it's about as good as LCD gets and at as nice a price as I was prepared to put into the tech right now.
Spiza @ Jul 6th 2008 5:40PM
This may come as a shock to you truth, but the world does not revolve around you. My reply was to zoran who was talking about a 120 Hz TV.
joe @ Jul 6th 2008 5:54PM
For a while I had my ps3 hooked up to a Sd tv and bought BluRay disks. For one the difference between HD and SD for gaming is minimal.I also knew that BD is going to be the format going into the future and at some point I would get a better BD player and HDTV,
Only when I got a 1080p set did I make the player move permanent. I have to say that I didn't expect it but when I have guests over now they take the time to marvel at my set up like you said.
Truth Teller @ Jul 6th 2008 6:09PM

I wasn't sure, that's all. NP
