Pioneer's 60-inch KURO PDP-LX6090 plasma gets unboxed
Just in case you didn't get a close enough look at Pioneer's next-gen KUROs earlier this year, the folks over at CNET UK managed to bring home a 60-inch PDP-LX6090 and snap a few pics. As expected, onlookers were thoroughly wowed after ripping it from the box and firing it up, with a tag line dubbing it "big, black and beautiful." See what they mean in the read link below.

Drool.
Now, if only I could sell my sould...
DrXym @ Jul 3rd 2008 10:37AM
Kuros look great but I wish they were 1080p. Perhaps its an inherent limitation of plasma. I'm in the market for a set and currently I'm veering towards a Samsung series 5 or 6.
DrXym @ Jul 3rd 2008 10:39AM
Should have read the link first - this set is 1080p. I think their smaller sets aren't though.
Loban @ Jul 3rd 2008 11:47AM
Ummm, they are 1080p. And even if they weren't, I'd rather have a 720 KURO than a 1080 anything else.
bobthehdbuilder @ Jul 3rd 2008 11:40AM
Couple things, first, they sell 1080p models. Second, Pioneer can get a 720 native set to look MUCH better than most other's 1080p sets. Why? Because resolution is not the most important factor to image quality. Pioneer knows, and understands, how to accomplish fantastic image quality
DrXym @ Jul 3rd 2008 11:48AM
You two should read my initial reply. I wrongly assumed all the sets in their range were 720p. I was reading Pioneer's own Kuro website just a few days ago and had only been looking at the specs for the 42 set.
Still, I wouldn't touch 720p (especially at Pioneer prices) no matter what when there are so many 1080p sets to choose from.
bobthehdbuilder @ Jul 3rd 2008 11:57AM
DrXym - again, 1080p ultimately doesn't mean very much. a 720p set from pioneer will look better your samsung, no question about it. The problem is that consumers are driven by hype, and the manufacturer's commercials....which quess what.....are designed to sell product. If you look at the facts, you need a very large image size to see any difference in resolution from the nominal seating position.

DrXym - "Still, I wouldn't touch 720p (especially at Pioneer prices) no matter what when there are so many 1080p sets to choose from."
That's really sad to hear. That just goes to show that the marketing speak and useless tech specs on TVs these days really are winning over a market of consumers that don't know any better.
You basically just said that you would rather have a TV with an inferior picture than buy a 720 set with the highest quality picture you can get.
If I had the money, I would buy a 720 KURO over a 1080 anything else any day of the week. But then I actually put more stock in the important specs like contrast, color reproduction, block levels, viewing angle, etc. Ya know, the parameters that actually effect the image quality. Which is why when I was in the market almost 2 years ago, I chose a 50" 720 plasma over a 60" 1080 DLP for the same price, best decision I could have made.
ian9outof10 @ Jul 3rd 2008 1:23PM
There is a decent argument to be made that 720p can look better than 1080p for SD material. Certainly, the 720p Pioneers I've seen are stunning, and as has been said, give me good black levels over high resolution any day of the week.
slarity @ Jul 3rd 2008 2:19PM
You can say 720p Kuros look better than most 1080p sets all you want but it still comes down to size vs viewing distance. I dont care how good Kuro is a 720p will not beat 1080p if your sitting too close to a large screen. (42" 4ft away or something rediculous like that)
I'd rather have slight skewed colors and not as deep blacks with smaller pixels than have huge pixels glaring at me. Again this example wouldnt happen often just stating that what you guys are saying is not always correct.
DrXym @ Jul 3rd 2008 4:02PM
Everything is a tradeoff - price, pixels, contrast, features. Personally I believe that 1080p is something I'm not prepared to compromise on. Why buy a blu ray player if you're just going to end up downscaling the image? BTW that doesn't mean I rule out a Kuro, just the 720p model which I mistakenly assumed applied across the whole range. I still think I will end up with a Samsung though. We'll see - I have 3-4 months before I make a purchase and I'm in no hurry.
bobthehdbuilder @ Jul 3rd 2008 4:25PM
Just because you "downscale" the image, doesn't make it worse. You're going to have the blu ray player send a 1080p image, and have the tv convert it to its native resolution. You are not losing anything by viewing 720p. You are just a sheep that has been herded by blu ray, and most tv manufacturer's. Get whichever set you want, just know that just because you get 1080p, doesn't mean it's a quality image.
DrXym @ Jul 4th 2008 6:06AM
"You're going to have the blu ray player send a 1080p image, and have the tv convert it to its native resolution. You are not losing anything by viewing 720p."
That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. 720p means 1280x720 pixels. 1080p means 1920x1080 pixels. Downscaling immediately means you lose 56% of the pixels of the original source image.
Saying I'm a sheep for not wanting 720p, just shows you don't have a clue. There is nothing wrong with wanting the image to be exactly as it comes off the disc.
Maybe the Kuro has wonderful blacks (I'm not denying it or ruling out the 1080p models as I've said repeatedly) but trying to convince me to toss out 56% of the image to get them is just not going to fly I'm afraid.

You ain't black enough honky.
ian9outof10 @ Jul 3rd 2008 1:17PM
LOL!
scottr @ Jul 4th 2008 2:01PM
The 9G Kuro models are all 1080p. Last years 8G came in 720p and 1080p models.
DrXym - while I don't confess of being an expert, you have said some incorrect things. Viewing distance is the determinate of 720p and 1080p at this time. Most companies are simply just making all 1080p lines now due to marketing.
Harmin C. @ Jul 7th 2008 5:19AM
DrXym... why post when you obviously dont understand what others are trying to say?
You obviously dont have a clue as to how good the Pioneer Kuro looks at 720p... My uncle owns a 42" kuro thats only 720p and it beats my 52" Bravia XBR 1080p anyday.
However, to each his own. For you size and "amount of pixels" matter... while to me, I'd much rather have better colors, deeper blacks, and a much better image. Your obviously fooling yourself if you think you can notice the "slight" changes in 720p and 1080p.
DrXym @ Jul 7th 2008 2:02PM
Losing 56% of the pixels in your image is not a "slight" change. And I certainly do not see why I should have to either.
